Manzardo's Blast Ignites the Guardians Early
The Guardians rolled into Yankee Stadium ready to fight. Cleveland was riding a two-game winning streak, but the Yankees were hungry tooâthey'd just lost the night before, 9-4. You could feel the energy crackling when Kyle Manzardo stepped up in the second inning. Gerrit Cole wound up and threw an 83-mile-per-hour knuckle curve. Manzardo connected hard. The ball rocketed to right field and sailed over the wall 370 feet away. One-nothing Guardians. But Jazz Chisholm Jr. answered right back in the bottom of the inning. Williams delivered a 97-mile-per-hour sinker. Chisholm Jr. crushed it 409 feet to right. The ball disappeared into the seats. The crowd roared. One-one. The game was heating up fast, and we were just getting started.
Vocab note: A knuckle curve is a pitch that floats unpredictably toward home plate.
Hoskins and Ramirez Power Cleveland Ahead
The fourth inning brought more fireworks. Rhys Hoskins stepped to the plate with two outs and Jose Ramirez on base. Cole threw an 89-mile-per-hour slider. Hoskins swung hard. The pitch flew off his bat toward left fieldâ382 feetâand disappeared. Three-one Guardians. The Yankees wouldn't quit though. Jose Caballero answered with a 364-foot home run in the bottom of the inning. Three-two. Then the sixth inning arrived. Jose Ramirez came up hungry. Cole fired a 98-mile-per-hour fastball right down the middle. Ramirez smashed it to right field, 363 feet away. Boom. Four-two Guardians. Cody Bellinger brought one back with a sacrifice fly, scoring Rice. Four-three. The Guardians were pulling away, but the Yankees kept clawing back into it.
Cleveland Holds Off Yankees' Late Rally
The eighth inning sealed it. Rhys Hoskins singled to left field, and Jose Ramirez raced home. Five-three Guardians. Then came the ninth. The Yankees mounted a last-ditch effort. Paul Goldschmidt was on third. Cade Smith took the mound to close it out. Bellinger stepped up and hit a sacrifice fly to center. Goldschmidt scored. Five-four. It wasn't enough. Smith got the final outs. Cleveland's bullpenâTim Herrin, Colin Holderman, Hunter Gaddis, and Smithâpitched 4 innings of shutout baseball. The Guardians moved to 37-27 with the victory. The Yankees fell to 36-26. Both teams are locked in a tight race, and every win matters. The Guardians showed they can win on the road with power hitting and rock-solid pitching backing it up.
