Guardians Strike Early in Philadelphia
The Cleveland Guardians came to Philadelphia hungry for another win. Just the night before, they lost 3–0 to the Phillies. Now they wanted to bounce back at Citizens Bank Park. The Guardians were rolling lately with an 8–2 record in their last ten games. The Phillies were struggling a bit at 26–27 overall. When the game started, Cleveland wasted no time. In the fifth inning, Steven Kwan lined a single to left field. Daniel Schneemann raced home from second base. The ball was struck with confidence off a 96-mile-per-hour fastball. Just like that, Cleveland led 1–0. The Guardians were in control early and the crowd in Philadelphia fell quiet.
Hoskins and Bazzana Extend the Lead
Cleveland kept the pressure on in the sixth inning. Rhys Hoskins stepped up to the plate against Andrew Painter. He crushed a double down the left field line. Chase DeLauter sprinted home from first base and the Guardians led 2–0. The Phillies finally got on the scoreboard in the seventh. Bryce Harper lifted a sacrifice fly to center field. Brandon Marsh raced across home plate. Philadelphia cut it to 2–1 but Cleveland was still winning. Then in the eighth inning, Travis Bazzana came through in a huge way. He ripped a fastball 412 feet over the right field wall. The ball soared through the air like a rocket. Bazzana's solo blast made it 3–1 Cleveland and the Guardians were in complete control.
Cleveland's Pitching Staff Shuts Down Philadelphia
The Guardians' pitching staff was phenomenal all game long. Parker Messick started and pitched 5.2 innings without allowing a single run. He scattered five hits and struck out six batters. The Cleveland bullpen took over and did not let the Phillies score again. Hunter Gaddis threw 1.1 innings and struck out two. Cade Smith came in for the save and threw a perfect inning. Cleveland's pitching depth proved to be the difference. The Guardians held Philadelphia scoreless after Harper's seventh-inning fly ball. When the final out was made, Cleveland won 3–1. The Guardians improved to 33–23 overall. The Phillies fell to 26–28. Cleveland's strong pitching arms controlled the game from start to finish.
