Arizona Hosts Colorado After Tough Road Trip
The Arizona Diamondbacks were riding high at home. They'd won five games in a row and sat at 26-23 on the season. The Colorado Rockies? They were struggling badly at 19-32, dropping three straight games. This Friday night at Chase Field in Phoenix felt like a mismatch on paper. Arizona's pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez looked sharp coming into the game. Colorado's lineup was banged up without key players in the middle of their lineup. The Rockies knew they had to find a way to compete. Arizona was hungry for another win to keep their winning streak alive. Both teams wanted this one badly.
Arizona Strikes in the Sixth Inning
Early innings stayed quiet. Both pitchers were throwing smoke. Zach Agnos for Colorado was dealingâhe fired five strong innings with just one hit allowed and four strikeouts. Eduardo Rodriguez for Arizona was equally sharp. The game stayed 0-0 until the bottom of the sixth. That's when the Diamondbacks broke through. Blas Castano took over pitching for Colorado. Corbin Carroll stepped up to the plate with runners in motion. Carroll's swing turned into a grounder to second base. But the play sparked something biggerâRyan Waldschmidt scored on the fielder's choice to give Arizona a 1-0 lead. The home crowd at Chase Field came alive. Arizona had the first strike.
Rockies Battle Back but Fall Just Short
The eighth inning gave Colorado hope. Juan Morillo was pitching for Arizona now. Tyler Freeman stepped into the box and got hit by a pitch. That was huge. Johnston scored from third base on the play. Suddenly it was tied 1-1. The game stayed locked at 1-1 heading into the ninth. Then came the final blow. Juan Mejia pitched for Colorado in the ninth. Corbin Carroll came up again. This time he singled to right field. Gabriel Moreno raced home with the go-ahead run. Carroll's hit in right field made it 2-1 Arizona. Colorado couldn't answer back. Arizona won 2-1. The Diamondbacks stayed hot at 27-22. Colorado fell to 19-33 and stayed searching for answers.
