Rockies Come to Wrigley Ready for a Fight
The Colorado Rockies rolled into Wrigley Field on Wednesday with momentum. They'd just beaten the Cubs 4-5 the night before, and now came back hungry for another win. The Chicago Cubs were sitting at 38-36, fighting to stay in the division race. Colorado stood at 28-46, but they didn't care about records today. This was about winning one game. Ryan Feltner took the mound for the Rockies, ready to shut down the Cubs lineup. The fans packed Wrigley Field, ready for action. Both teams knew this series mattered. By game's end, Colorado's bats would thunder through Chicago's pitching. The final score: Rockies 5, Cubs 2. The visiting team had just stolen a crucial victory on enemy turf.
The Cubs Strike First Then Rockies Roar Back
Pete Crow-Armstrong crushed the very first pitch he saw. Feltner fired a 96-mile-per-hour fastball, and Crow-Armstrong turned on it instantly. The ball rocketed to right field and sailed over the wall for a home run. Cubs led 1-0 before Colorado even stepped up to bat. But then came the second inning. A wild pitch by Feltner got away from the catcher. Matt Shaw scored easily. One inning, one Colorado run. The score stayed tight. Then the fourth inning exploded. Willi Castro doubled to center field, and Jake McCarthy sprinted home. Two pitches later, TJ Rumfield launched a curveball deep to right-center. His home run cleared the fence. Two more runs crossed. Colorado led 3-1. The Rockies were heating up fast.
Colorado Pulls Away Late as Cubs Cannot Answer
The fifth inning brought more Colorado magic. Brett Sullivan scored on another wild pitch by Ryan Rolison, who had come in to pitch relief. Then Willi Castro grounded out to shortstop, and Ezequiel Tovar raced home. The Rockies led 5-1 now. Their bats were on fire. Feltner had done his job early, pitching 4.2 innings and striking out 7 batters. Colorado's bullpen took over from there. Blas Castano, Brennan Bernardino, Victor Vodnik, and Jaden Hill combined to shut down the Cubs the rest of the way. Chicago got one more run somehow, but it wasn't enough. The final score was 5-2, Colorado. The Rockies improved to 29-46 with this road victory. Chicago fell to 38-37. Colorado had stolen the game at Wrigley Field.
