The Astros Strike Early at Home
The Colorado Rockies and Houston Astros squared off on Thursday at Minute Maid Park in Houston. Coming off a wild 7-6 loss the night before, Colorado hoped to bounce back against the Astros' pitching staff. However, Houston's lineup came out swinging from the opening pitch. In the bottom of the first inning, the Astros put immediate pressure on Rockies starter José Quintana. Walker stepped up and sent a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Correa. Just moments later, with two outs, Smith delivered another sacrifice fly to left, and Alvarez crossed home plate. Houston had already grabbed a 2-0 lead before the Rockies could even record an out. The Astros' early aggression set the tone for what would become a tough day for Colorado's pitching staff.
Colorado Fights Back, Houston Extends Lead
The Rockies responded quickly in the second inning when Willi Castro stepped up to the plate. Despite dealing with a day-to-day bruise, Castro connected with a cutter at eighty-seven miles per hour. His double to center field traveled four hundred nineteen feet with tremendous exit velocity of one hundred nine miles per hour. Tovar raced home from first base, cutting Houston's lead to 2-1. Unfortunately for Colorado, that would be their only run of the game. Back on the mound, Quintana worked hard but couldn't prevent the Astros from continuing to score. In the third inning, Alvarez stepped up and delivered a powerful blow. His home run soared three hundred seventy-five feet to right field. Houston's lead stretched to 3-1, and the Astros were building momentum that Colorado couldn't match.
Astros Secure Victory Over Struggling Rockies
As the game progressed, the Rockies couldn't find their rhythm against Houston's pitching. Colorado managed only three hits throughout the entire game, showing just how difficult the Astros' defense proved. Meanwhile, Houston added three more runs in the ninth inning to put the game completely out of reach. When the final out was recorded, the scoreboard showed Houston 5, Colorado 1. This victory extended the Astros' winning streak to two games, bringing their record to 8-11 at home. For Colorado, the loss marked their sixth consecutive defeat, dropping their record to 6-12. The Rockies' struggles continued as they faced injuries to key players, including Kyle Freeland on the injured list. Thursday's game illustrated why the Astros had home-field advantage, and how challenging it remains for Colorado to compete early in the season.
