Tiger Bats Wake Up, but Sox Stay Sharp
The Tigers came to Chicago hungry after losing two straight. Detroit sat at 22-36 overall, needing some offensive magic against the White Sox. The White Sox were rolling with three wins in a row and owned a solid 30-27 record at home. You could feel the energy at the ballpark as Erick Fedde took the mound for Chicago. The Tigers struck first in the third inning when Dillon Dingler crushed an 88-mile-per-hour changeup over the left-center wall. His two-run homer scored Zack Short and gave Detroit a 2-0 lead early. The crowd got quiet for a moment. But Chicago had an answer ready.
Vargas Powers Sox Back with Big Swings
The White Sox answered right back in the bottom of the third. Miguel Vargas stepped up to face Troy Melton and drove a 95-mile-per-hour fastball into left field for a double. Luisangel Acuna raced home from second base. Suddenly it was 2-1, and Chicago had momentum. The game stayed tight through the middle innings as both teams played tough defense. But you could sense something brewing in Chicago's lineup. Vargas felt dangerous at the plate. He kept fouling off pitches and working deeper into counts. The White Sox were gaining confidence with each batter. By the ninth inning, the teams were locked in a battle.
Vargas Walks Off as White Sox Edge Tigers
The ninth inning exploded with drama. Kyle Finnegan pitched for Detroit and faced the White Sox. Rikuu Nishida laid down a sacrifice bunt toward first base. Spencer Torkelson's throwing error let Andrew Benintendi race home. It was 2-2 and tied up tight. The game went to the tenth inning where Bryan Hudson took over pitching. Matt Vierling hit a sacrifice fly that scored Zack Short to put Detroit ahead 3-2. But Chicago had the final say. Miguel Vargas stepped to the plate with runners on base. He rocketed a 90-mile-per-hour changeup to left-center field for his second big hit of the night. His homer scored Drew Romo and won it 4-3. The White Sox mobbed Vargas at home plate. Detroit fell to 22-37. Chicago improved to 31-27.
