Detroit Strikes First, But Chicago Stays Hot
The Tigers rolled into Chicago on a brutal four-game losing streak. They needed a win badly. The White Sox, meanwhile, were riding high with five straight wins and had just crushed Detroit 7-1 the night before. You could feel the energy shift in the first inning when Spencer Torkelson stepped up to face Sean Burke. Burke threw a slider at 87 miles per hour, and Torkelson didn't miss it. The ball screamed toward left field as Kevin McGonigle raced home with Detroit's opening run. The Tigers had their 1-0 lead. But Chicago's bats were hungry. The White Sox wanted to prove yesterday wasn't a fluke. They were ready to answer back.
Chicago Erupts in the Seventh Inning
The game stayed tied at 1-1 through six innings. Then the seventh arrived, and everything changed. Colson Montgomery stepped in against Drew Anderson. Anderson threw a changeup at 90 miles per hour right down the middle. Montgomery connected with thunder. The ball rocketed over the right-center wall 373 feet away. One swing, and Chicago had taken the lead 2-1. The crowd at the White Sox stadium exploded. The momentum shifted completely. But there was more coming. Tristan Peters followed with a single to left field. He smashed it hard enough that Chase Meidroth raced home to score. Chicago now led 2-1, and the Tigers couldn't find an answer. Detroit's pitching had held up for six innings, but seventh inning gave everything away.
White Sox Hold On for the Victory
Detroit tried to mount a comeback, but Chicago's pitchers slammed the door. Sean Burke had already thrown 5 and one-third innings of sharp baseball, striking out six Tigers. Drew Anderson gave up the two runs but didn't get the win. Chris Murphy, Brandon Eisert, Bryan Hudson, and Tyler Davis took over and refused to budge. The White Sox defense held tight through the final innings. Detroit's bats went quiet. Riley Greene struck out. Wenceel Perez struck out. Jake Rogers struck out twice. The Tigers couldn't string together any hits when they needed them most. Final score: Chicago 2, Detroit 1. The White Sox improved to 32-27 with their sixth straight victory. Detroit fell to 22-38, stuck in a five-game losing skid now. This one hurt because the Tigers had a chance early.
