Tigers Seek Revenge After Dominant Win
Remember that 9-3 explosion the night before? The Tigers came to Houston hungry for more. Detroit had shut down the Astros with power and precision on Tuesday. Now they wanted to do it again. But Houston had other plans. The Astros were ready to fight back. Peter Lambert took the mound for Houston with a mission. Casey Mize started for Detroit, hoping to build on his team's momentum. Both teams knew this game mattered. The Tigers were struggling overall at 30-44. Houston sat at 35-41. Every win counted in June. The crowd in Houston was loud and ready. You could feel the energy. This wasn't just another game. This was a chance for Houston to bounce back. Detroit wanted to prove Tuesday wasn't a fluke. The stage was set for an epic battle between two teams fighting for respect.
Astros Strike Early and Often
The third inning was everything. Jeremy Peña stepped up with two outs already recorded. Casey Mize wound up and threw a fastball right down the middle at 93 miles per hour. Peña crushed it to left field. The ball soared over the wall fast. Houston led 1-0. But the Astros weren't done. In the fifth inning, things got worse for Detroit. Christian Vázquez crossed the plate on a double by Yordan Alvarez to center field. Now it was 2-0. Then Isaac Paredes slapped a double to left, scoring Alvarez. The Astros were rolling. Kyle Finnegan took over pitching for Mize in relief. But Houston kept pushing. In the sixth, Jeremy Peña singled to right, and Joey Loperfido sprinted home. Houston led 4-0. The Tigers needed a spark immediately or this game would slip away completely.
Tigers Battle Back But Fall Short
Detroit needed magic. Kerry Carpenter delivered in the seventh inning. He stepped into a Peter Lambert fastball at 92 miles per hour. The bat cracked. The ball flew to left field and over the wall. Tigers cut it to 4-1. Hope flickered. Then in the ninth inning, Kevin McGonigle came through. He launched a pitch from closer Josh Hader into left field. Another home run. The Tigers made it 4-2. But time was running out. Detroit couldn't find one more run. The Astros held on. Peter Lambert was brilliant, pitching seven innings with just two hits allowed. Josh Hader closed it out with three strikeouts in one inning, securing the save. Houston escaped 4-2. The Astros improved to 36-41. Detroit fell to 30-45. The Tigers' two-game streak of dominance was over. This loss stung hard.
