Tigers Start Strong, but Mets Battle Back
The Detroit Tigers and New York Mets faced off on Thursday, May 14, in a thrilling matchup that told the story of momentum shifting back and forth. Detroit came into the game riding a three-game losing streak after losing their previous matchup to the Mets 3–2 in extras. The Mets, meanwhile, were hot, winning three straight games heading into this contest. What unfolded was an exciting game where early power ruled the day. Keider Montero took the mound for the Tigers while Nolan McLean started for New York. The atmosphere was electric as both teams looked to build on their recent form and grab control of the series.
Detroit came out swinging from the opening inning. Workman stepped to the plate with runners on first and third and two outs. He connected with a sweeper at 83 mph and crushed it 379 feet to left center field. The ball soared over the wall, and the crowd erupted as three runs scored. Keith and Greene came home with the blast. The Tigers held a commanding 3–0 lead before the Mets even got their first at-bat. This aggressive start gave Detroit early confidence and seemed to set the tone for what could be an impressive victory.
Mets Explode with Offense in the Middle Innings
Although Detroit led 3–0 after the first inning, the Mets refused to let the Tigers control the game. New York responded with patient hitting and aggressive baserunning throughout the middle innings. Ewing launched a solo home run in the third inning to make it 3–1. Then came the fourth inning, where Brett Baty stepped up with one out and a runner on first. The umpire had to review whether his fly ball to left center was a home run, but the call on the field was upheld at 379 feet. MJ Melendez scored on the two-run blast, tying the game at three. The momentum had clearly shifted. By the fifth inning, the Mets were firing on all cylinders. Soto singled to center, driving in a run, then Vientos launched a massive 392-foot home run that scored two more. New York took a commanding 6–3 lead, and the Tigers' early advantage had completely disappeared.
Mets Close Out Victory with Late Fireworks
The Mets kept their offensive momentum rolling in the sixth and seventh innings. Senger laid down a sacrifice bunt in the sixth that allowed Semien to score, pushing New York's lead to 7–3. Then in the seventh, Soto connected on a changeup and sent it 412 feet to center field for a solo home run, making it 8–3. The Mets' aggressive approach and clutch hitting had put the game out of reach. Detroit tried to respond when Dingler launched a 379-foot home run to left center in the eighth inning, cutting the lead to 8–4. However, the Mets answered immediately when Semien homered to left in the bottom of the eighth, extending New York's lead to 9–4. Final score: Mets 9, Tigers 4. This victory improved New York's record and continued their winning streak, while Detroit fell further behind with their third consecutive loss and slipped to 19–25.
