Tigers Strike First on Errors at Yankee Stadium
The Detroit Tigers rolled into Yankee Stadium hungry for a win after dropping their last two games. The Yankees came in on a four-game losing streak themselves. Both teams needed this one badly. On the mound for New York was Ryan Weathers. He was about to face the Detroit lineup, and right away things went wrong. In the first inning, Spencer Torkelson smashed a single to center field. That brought Dillon Dingler home. The score was 1-0 Tigers. The mistakes piled up fast. Weathers couldn't find his rhythm. The pressure built with every pitch he threw to the Tigers' hitters. Detroit's bats were alive and hungry.
Detroit's Explosive Second Inning Blows Game Open
The second inning turned into a disaster for the Yankees. Weathers kept throwing changeups and sliders at the Tigers. They kept hitting them hard. With one out, Matt Vierling put the ball in play. He reached first base when Jose Caballero made a throwing error at third. James Outman sprinted to third on the same wild throw. The bases were getting crowded with Tigers runners. Next up was Dillon Dingler. He lifted a sacrifice fly to center. Outman tagged up and scored. It was 2-0 now. But the bleeding wasn't done. Hao-Yu Lee stepped in and singled left. McGonigle and Vierling both came home on the hit. Suddenly it was 5-0 Tigers. Detroit was in total control. The Yankees looked lost at the plate.
Tigers Roll to 7-3 Victory Behind Mize's Brilliance
Casey Mize took the mound for Detroit and was absolutely dominant. He pitched seven innings and gave up just one hit while striking out ten Yankees batters. That's the kind of pitching you dream about. The Yankees didn't score until the eighth inning. Then things got a little interesting. Amed Rosario stepped up to the plate facing Drew Sommers. Rosario connected on a 89-mile-per-hour changeup and rocketed it to left-center field. The ball soared 378 feet and cleared the wall. Jasson Dominguez and Spencer Jones both came home on the blast. The Tigers won 7-3. Detroit improved to 35-49 while the Yankees fell to 48-35. The Tigers' pitching staff showed why they came into the season with big expectations.
