Orioles Strike First at Home Against Astros
The Baltimore Orioles hosted the Houston Astros on Tuesday, April 28, in a matchup between two teams heading in different directions. Coming into the game, Baltimore had just lost to Boston but was eager to bounce back at home. Houston, meanwhile, was riding high after defeating the Yankees the previous day. However, the Orioles came out firing immediately. In the bottom of the first inning, Adley Rutschman singled to left field on a changeup, bringing Henderson across the plate for the first run. The Astros' pitcher Kai-Wei Teng was struggling early. Basallo followed with a double to right, and Rutschman scored easily. Just like that, Baltimore led two to nothing without the Astros even recording a hit. The home team had seized momentum right away, and the crowd roared with excitement.
Matthews Responds With Power in the Fifth
The game stayed close as both teams worked to build on their early success. In the top of the fifth inning, Houston finally got on the board when Matthews crushed a fastball into right center field. The ball soared high and far, traveling three hundred eighty-seven feet before landing beyond the wall. It was a powerful swing that showed the Astros weren't going to go down without a fight. The score was now one to two, with Baltimore still ahead. But Baltimore answered right back in the bottom of the fifth with some thunder of their own. Alonso stepped up and launched his own home run, also to right center. With a runner on first, his blast traveled three hundred eighty feet and scored two more runs. That made it four to one, and the Orioles had pulled away significantly. Houston was running out of time to catch up.
Late Rally Not Enough for Houston in Eighth
The Orioles kept their lead through the sixth and seventh innings, though Rutschman added another run-scoring single in the seventh to make it five to one. Houston refused to quit, though. In the eighth inning, Harris ripped a triple to right field, traveling two hundred nineteen feet and putting a runner in scoring position. Matthews followed immediately with a single to right, and Harris scored to make it five to two. Houston tacked on one more run in that inning, cutting the deficit to five to three. However, time was running out, and Baltimore held firm in the final frame. Despite the Astros' eighth-inning surge, the Orioles closed out the victory with a five to three final score. This win gave Baltimore momentum heading forward while Houston, now at eleven wins and nineteen losses, would need to regroup and find consistency in their new pitching rotation era.
