Two Teams Ready to Battle in Motor City
The Houston Astros rolled into Detroit's Comerica Park looking to keep their winning streak alive. They had won their last two games and sat at 39-43 overall. The Tigers were struggling, having lost two straight, with a 34-46 record. Both teams needed wins badly. The Astros had their ace Tatsuya Imai on the mound. This was huge for Houston since their pitching staff was still adjusting after losing longtime star Framber Valdez. The Tigers sent out Troy Melton to try and shut down the Astros' bats. You could feel the energy right from the start.
Imai Dominates, Trammell Puts Houston on Top
Taylor Trammell stepped up against Melton in the sixth inning and changed everything. The slider came in at 87 miles per hour and Trammell connected perfectly. The ball rocketed over the right field wall 422 feet away. The crowd groaned as Houston took the lead 1-0. Tatsuya Imai was pitching like a machine out there. He struck out ten batters in six innings and gave up absolutely nothing. The Astros' new star from Japan was making his mark in Detroit. Jeremy Pena was also working hard, getting hits and moving around the bases. Houston's pitching staff looked stronger than anyone expected.
Late Drama Seals Houston's Tight Victory
The ninth inning brought the real tension. Isaac Paredes lofted a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Jeremy Pena. Now it was 2-0, Houston. But Detroit wasn't done fighting. Dillon Dingler stepped up and crushed a solo home run deep to center field 432 feet out. The Tigers had life at 2-1. Houston brought in Enyel De Los Santos to close it out. He got the job done, striking out batters and slamming the door. The Astros hung on for a 2-1 win. Houston improved to 40-43. Detroit fell to 34-47. These close games matter when you're trying to climb back into contention.
