Astros Travel to Kansas City for Saturday Showdown
The Houston Astros came to Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City ready for a fight. Houston was riding a one-game winning streak but sitting at 32-39 overall. The Royals were struggling too at 28-42 and had lost three straight games. Both teams needed this win badly. When the dust settled, the Astros walked away with an 8-7 victory in a game packed with home runs and big moments. The Royals struck first, but Houston's bats would have the final say in this back-and-forth battle.
The early innings belonged to Kansas City's hitters. Michael Massey singled to right field in the second inning, scoring Jac Caglianone. The Royals kept rolling in the third. Vinnie Pasquantino slapped a single to center that brought Carter Jensen home. Then disaster struck for Houston—catcher Christian Vazquez let a pitch get past him. Bobby Witt Jr. sprinted home from third base. Another passed ball moved Pasquantino to second. Kansas City led 3-0 and looked ready to run away with it. But the Astros' powerful lineup was just warming up.
Home Runs Fly as Houston Claws Back into the Game
Christian Walker stepped to the plate in the fourth inning and crushed a fastball deep to left field. The ball rocketed 394 feet over the wall—a two-run blast that made it 3-2. Yordan Alvarez had been on base and now trotted home with Walker. Houston was back in this game. But Kansas City answered right back. Lane Thomas took a pitch and sent it soaring over the left-center field wall. A solo shot. Score was 4-3 with the Royals still ahead.
The fifth inning exploded with Houston offense. Brice Matthews stepped in and smashed a 434-foot monster shot to center field. Jake Meyers was on base and they both scored. Houston led 5-4. In the sixth, Meyers himself launched a 419-foot home run to left-center. Now the Astros led 5-4. But Kansas City struck back hard. Carter Jensen doubled to center field and the floodgates opened. Perez scored. Thomas scored. Massey scored. Three runs on one double. Kansas City retook the lead 7-5.
Astros Storm Back in Late Innings for Dramatic Win
Jose Altuve came up huge in the eighth inning. He swung hard and sent a 407-foot home run flying into left field. Isaac Paredes was on base. Two runs scored. It was suddenly tied 7-7 and the crowd couldn't believe it. Houston had climbed right back in this game. The Astros smelled blood now. Their bats had answered every punch Kansas City threw.
In the ninth inning, Christian Walker stepped up with two outs. He put the ball in play and reached base on a fielder's choice. That's when Luis Loperfido scored the go-ahead run. Houston led 8-7 and they were about to close this out. The final answer came from Bryan Abreu, Houston's closer. He shut the door in the ninth inning. The Astros won 8-7 in a back-and-forth slugfest. Houston improved to 33-39 while Kansas City fell to 28-43. Both teams had given fans everything they had.
