Angels Strike Fast Against Struggling Astros Pitching
The Houston Astros came to Anaheim looking to bounce back after losing 5-4 to the Angels the night before. But right from the start, Los Angeles had other plans. Astros pitcher Kai-Wei Teng couldn't find the strike zone or his control. In the first inning, Wade Meckler walked and reached base, and Nolan Schanuel got hit by a pitch. That brought home Zach Neto. Two batters later, Oswald Peraza grounded into a fielder's choice that scored Meckler. The Angels had 2 runs and hadn't even finished the first inning yet. Teng threw 87 mph changeups and 94 mph sinkers, but the Angels were ready. Houston's record dropped to 31-39 on the road.
Angels Explosion in Second Inning Puts Game Out of Reach
Things got worse for Kai-Wei Teng in the second inning. Wade Meckler stepped up and crushed a double to left field off a 94 mph sinker. That single hit brought home two runsāSebastian Rivero and Zach Neto both scored. Jo Adell followed with his own double to left, driving in two more runs. The Angels had scored 6 runs in the second inning alone! Oswald Peraza then grounded out to short, but that brought home another run for 7 total in two innings. The Angels were destroying Astros pitching. Teng threw hard with his sinkers, but he couldn't stop Los Angeles. Houston's pitching staff was completely overwhelmed.
Late Innings Bring Astros' Only Run, Angels Cruise to Win
The Astros finally got on the board in the seventh inning when Brice Matthews singled to right field, scoring Collin Price. That made it 1-7. But the Angels weren't done scoring. In the eighth inning, Trey Mancini hit a sacrifice fly that brought home Mike Trout. Then things got messy for Houston's defense. An error by Isaac Paredes at third base let Oswald Peraza reach first safely, and Adell scored on the mistake. That pushed the Angels to 9 runs. Denzer Guzman grounded into another fielder's choice that scored Adell. Final score: Los Angeles Angels 10, Houston Astros 1. The Angels improved to 26-42 while Houston fell to 31-39.
