Tigers Edge Royals in Thrilling Back-and-Forth Battle
The Kansas City Royals visited Detroit on Thursday for a pitching showdown that turned into an offensive explosion. Coming off a tough 2-1 loss the night before, Kansas City hoped to bounce back against the Tigers' powerful pitching staff. Detroit came into the game riding a six-game winning streak and sitting at 10-9 overall. However, neither team expected the wild scoring that unfolded. Starting pitchers Kris Bubic and Keider Montero took the mound with hopes of keeping runs off the board. Early on, Detroit struck first when Torkelson doubled in the second inning, giving the Tigers an early 1-0 lead. Kansas City tied it up in the fourth when Jensen's infield single brought home a run. The game remained competitive as both teams battled through the middle innings, setting up a dramatic second half.
Detroit's Explosive Fifth Inning Changes Everything
The fifth inning became the turning point when Detroit's offense took over completely. Torres blasted a double into left field, scoring Báez and giving the Tigers a 3-1 lead. Moments later, Jones singled to left, and Torres raced home to make it 4-1. Then disaster struck for Kansas City as Dingler connected on a home run that sailed 411 feet, clearing the left field wall. That three-run blast put Detroit up 6-1, and suddenly the game felt out of reach. Kansas City wasn't done, though. In the sixth inning, Perez hit a sacrifice fly that scored Witt Jr., cutting the deficit to 6-2. Despite falling behind, the Royals showed resilience and refused to quit, keeping themselves in the game.
Kansas City's Seventh-Inning Explosion Forces Extra Drama
Everything changed in the seventh inning when Kansas City's bats came alive. Caglianone singled to center, scoring India and cutting Detroit's lead to 6-3. Garcia followed with another single, driving in Caglianone to make it 6-4. Witt Jr. reached on an infield single that scored Thomas, closing the gap to 6-5. Then Perez stepped up and launched a three-run home run 379 feet into left field, giving Kansas City an 8-6 lead. Detroit answered back in the same inning when Carpenter hit a sacrifice fly, scoring McGonigle to make it 8-7. In the ninth, Pasquantino homered 412 feet to extend Kansas City's lead to 9-7. But Detroit refused to quit. Greene doubled, scoring two runners, then Keith singled home Greene for the game-winning 10-9 victory.
