Royals Strike First in Tampa Bay
The Kansas City Royals rolled into Tampa to face the Rays on Monday night, looking to bounce back after losing the day before. You could feel the energy shift early when Lane Thomas stepped up in the second inning. Rasmussen threw an 88-mile-per-hour cutter. Thomas swung hard and drove a double down the left field line. Michael Massey came flying home. Just like that, Kansas City led 1-0. The Royals weren't done. Carter Jensen came up in the fifth inning with Isaac Collins on second base. Jensen met an 90-mile-per-hour cutter and singled to center field. Nick Loftin raced home. Kansas City doubled their lead to 2-0. Michael Wacha was pitching lights out for the Royals, keeping Tampa locked down on the mound.
Tampa Bay Fights Back in Fifth
The Rays weren't going away quietly. In the fifth inning, Yandy Diaz stepped into the batter's box against Michael Wacha. Wacha threw an 80-mile-per-hour changeup that caught too much of the plate. Diaz whipped his bat around and drove the ball into left field. The ball bounced off the grassâa double. Richie Palacios sprinted home from first base. The scoreboard flipped to 2-1. Kansas City's lead was shrinking. The Royals' pitching staff continued to clamp down hard. Wacha threw seven strong innings, allowing just one run on six hits. He struck out five batters and didn't let Tampa tie it up. The Rays had their chances, but couldn't push enough runners across the plate when it mattered most.
Royals Survive Late for Tight Victory
Kansas City held on tight as the final innings arrived. Michael Wacha pitched a complete game through seven innings, giving up just one run and five strikeouts. The Royals brought in John Schreiber and Alex Lange to lock down the final two innings. Lange struck out one batter and didn't allow any hits. The Rays pushed hard in their final at-bats, but couldn't break through. The final score stayed 2-1, Kansas City. The Royals improved to 32-47 with this clutch road win. The Rays dropped to 43-32 despite playing at home. This victory was huge for Kansas City's pitching staffâthey dominated from start to finish. Michael Wacha became the ace of this particular night. For Tampa Bay, Drew Rasmussen took the loss after giving up two runs in six innings.
