Washington Strikes First in the Third
The Nationals came alive fast at home. Michael Wacha threw an 82-mile-per-hour changeup, and Nasim Nunez smacked it hard to right field. The ball soared all the way to the wall for a triple. Drew Millas raced home to put Washington up 1-0. Two pitches later, James Wood stepped up with Nunez still on third base. Wood connected on an 81-mile-per-hour changeup and sent a sacrifice fly to center field. Nunez tagged up and sprinted home. The Nationals led 2-0 after just three innings. The Royals' bats stayed quiet early. Kansas City would need to battle back fast if they wanted to stay in this game.
Kansas City Battles Back in the Fifth and Seventh
Bobby Witt Jr. stepped up for the Royals in the fifth inning with runners in scoring position. The Royals' star singled to right field on a 79-mile-per-hour curve. Tyler Tolbert crossed home plate. Kansas City cut it to 2-1. But Washington answered right back. James Wood singled to center, and Nunez scored again. The Nationals pushed it to 3-1. The seventh inning brought drama. Isaac Collins ripped a single to left field that scored both Lane Thomas and Witt Jr. The Royals tied the game at 3-3. Everything was level. Everything was tight. But the Nationals had more firepower coming.
Washington Walks Off with Victory
The seventh inning belonged to the Nationals. Daniel Lynch IV took over pitching for Kansas City, and Curtis Mead crushed a 424-foot bomb to center field. The ball disappeared over the wall. Three runs scored on that one swing. Washington jumped ahead 6-3. Lane Thomas gave the Royals hope in the ninth inning. He hammered a 407-foot home run to left field. The ball flew over the wall and landed in the stands. It was a solo shot that made it 6-4. But that was all Kansas City could muster. Washington held on to win 6-4. The Royals fell to 29-44. The Nationals improved to 38-35 and kept their winning streak alive with their third straight victory.
