Angels Strike First at Chase Field
The Angels showed up to Arizona hungry for payback. They'd lost the night before 4-3, falling short in a tight battle. Now they were back at Chase Field ready to prove themselves. Merrill Kelly took the mound for the Diamondbacks. In the second inning, Wade Meckler lined a single to center field, and Jo Adell raced home. One-nothing, Angels. But the fun was just beginning. Zach Neto stepped up in the third and crushed a fastball 421 feet to left field. The ball exploded off his bat. Two-nothing. The Angels were rolling early, and Arizona's pitcher was already in trouble. Every Angels batter looked locked in and ready to swing.
Trout Powers the Angels to Blowout
Mike Trout wasn't done yet. The Angels' center fielder stepped into the box in the fifth inning with Zach Neto on base. He connected on a pitch and sent it soaring 436 feet to center field. Gone. Five-nothing, Angels. In the sixth, Trout doubled to left, and Denzer Guzman scored. Six-nothing. Donovan Walton added a single in the fourth, pushing Guzman across. The Diamondbacks kept searching for an answer, but Kelly was getting pounded. Every inning brought another dagger. The Angels were hitting anything close to the strike zone. Arizona's bats stayed silent. Not a single run. The game was becoming a lesson in how one team could take over completely and another couldn't find the handle.
Angels Shut Out Diamondbacks Completely
The Diamondbacks fought back with relief pitchers, but the damage was already done. Ryan Thompson came in during the sixth. Drey Jameson took over in the eighth. Nothing worked. In the eighth, Donovan Walton crushed a ground rule double, and Logan O'Hoppe scored his second run of the night. Seven-nothing. The final score: Los Angeles 7, Arizona 0. Reid Detmers was brilliant on the mound, pitching seven strong innings with just three hits and no runs. Kirby Yates and Chase Silseth closed it out. The Angels improved to 31-44. Arizona dropped to 37-37. It was a complete shutdown. The Diamondbacks couldn't buy a hit when it mattered. The Angels dominated from first pitch to last, and Arizona had no answer.
