Angels Visit Guardians on May 11
The Los Angeles Angels traveled to Cleveland to face the Guardians on Monday, May 11. Coming off a big five-run fifth inning victory over Toronto, the Angels hoped to keep their winning momentum going. Meanwhile, Cleveland had lost their last two games and looked to bounce back at home. Brent Suter took the mound for Los Angeles, while Joey Cantillo started for the Guardians. Though the Angels entered the season with questions about their pitching staff, they were counting on experienced closer Kirby Yates to stabilize the ninth inning. Cleveland's strength had always been their pitching depth, with talented arms like Gavin Williams and Tanner Bibee leading the rotation. The Guardians were looking to prove they could compete in the American League Central. However, this night would belong to Cleveland's bats.
Cleveland Explodes in Third Inning
The game remained scoreless through the first inning, but Cleveland struck hard in the second. Rocchio singled to right field, sending two runners home on a two-run hit. The ball traveled 216 feet at 88 miles per hour, and suddenly the Guardians led 2-0. In the third inning, the Angels' pitching fell apart completely. Fry walked with the bases loaded, scoring one more run and making it 3-0. Then Schneemann delivered a clutch single to right, driving in two more runners. With bases loaded again, Bazzana stepped up and crushed a double down the left field line. His bat speed created an exit velocity of 100 miles per hour, sending the ball 335 feet into the gap. Two more Guardians crossed home plate, and Cleveland had jumped to a dominant 7-0 lead before the Angels could respond.
Late Angels Scoring Cannot Mount Comeback
After Cleveland's explosive third inning, the Angels faced a challenging 7-0 deficit that seemed impossible to overcome. Los Angeles finally got on the board in the eighth inning when Adell singled to center field, scoring Soler. The hit came off a hard-thrown 98 miles per hour sinker, and the Angels cut the lead to 7-1. In the ninth inning, Grissom added another single to left field, driving in Neto and making it 7-2. Despite these late scoring efforts, the Angels could not close the gap. The game ended with Cleveland winning 7-2, giving the Guardians a bounce-back victory after losing their previous two games. Los Angeles fell to 16-25 on the season, while Cleveland improved to 21-21 and remained competitive in their division heading forward into the week.
