Freeman and Ohtani strike fast for the Dodgers
The Dodgers came into Chase Field hungry after losing 4-1 the night before. Los Angeles wanted to bounce back hard. Michael Soroka took the mound for Arizona, and the Dodgers attacked right away. In the first inning, Freddie Freeman stepped up with Shohei Ohtani on base. Freeman connected on a 94-mile-per-hour fastball and sent it rocketing to right-center field. The ball sailed over the wall for a two-run homer. Just one inning later, Ohtani came up and crushed a triple into right field. Two more runners scored on that hit. The Dodgers led 4-0 before Arizona even got their first at-bat. Los Angeles was in complete control early. Their bats were locked in and ready for a fight.
Diamondbacks claw back but still trail
Arizona fought back but couldn't keep pace with Los Angeles. In the third inning, Corbin Carroll smashed an 88-mile-per-hour slider over the left field wall. Carroll's home run made it 4-1. Two innings later, Ketel Marte hit a sacrifice fly to center field. That brought Jorge Barrosa home and cut the lead to 4-2. The Dodgers answered back in the seventh. Andy Pages hit a sacrifice fly to left that scored Dalton Rushing. Mookie Betts followed with a single to left that brought home Ohtani. Suddenly the Dodgers led 6-2. Arizona needed a big rally fast. The game was slipping away. Soroka had given up too much too soon.
Arenado powers a final charge but Dodgers hold on
Arizona made one last push in the bottom of the seventh. Nolan Arenado stepped into the box and crushed a 96-mile-per-hour fastball. His double to left field brought home Gabriel Moreno and Ketel Marte. The score was now 6-4. Then Pavin Smith drew a walk that scored Arenado. Suddenly the Diamondbacks cut it to 6-5. Arizona was back in this game. But the Dodgers held strong in the eighth and ninth innings. Tanner Scott came in and locked down the final inning with a save. The Dodgers escaped Arizona with a 6-5 victory. Los Angeles improved to 40-22 on the season. The Diamondbacks fell to 32-29. This win gave the Dodgers another step forward in a great season.
