Dodgers Strike First But Fall Behind Fast
The Dodgers came into Chicago ready to pile on the runs. They'd knocked out the White Sox 7-1 the night before and wanted to keep rolling. But this game? This one told a totally different story. Freddie Freeman smashed the first pitch he saw from Bryan Hudson over the right field wall. One swing. One run. The Dodgers had the lead 1-0 early. Then everything flipped. The White Sox bats woke up in the sixth inning and didn't stop swinging. Sam Antonacci cranked a fastball 415 feet into right field for a home run. Andrew Benintendi doubled to right. Colson Montgomery launched one over the wall at 410 feet with Benintendi racing home. Chase Meidroth added another homer to right at 366 feet. Just like that, the White Sox turned a 1-0 game into a 6-1 blowout. The Dodgers' pitching staff suddenly looked vulnerable. Los Angeles trailed 6-1 after six innings and had serious catching up to do.
White Sox Explode in Sixth, Take Control
Here's what happened in that sixth inning. The White Sox came up swinging and didn't miss. Antonacci led off with that monster 415-foot bomb. Two pitches later, Benintendi doubled to the right. Then Montgomery stepped up and sent a fastball at 92 miles per hour flying out to right field. Two runners scored on that blast. You could feel the momentum shift. The White Sox kept attacking. Meidroth came to the plate and crushed another one over the wall at 366 feet with two outs. Four home runs in one inning. Four. The crowd in Chicago went absolutely wild. Jack Dreyer replaced Sheehan on the mound but the damage was done. The White Sox had taken full control. They led 6-1 and the Dodgers looked rattled. Los Angeles needed something big to get back into this game.
Dodgers Rally Late But White Sox Hold On for Victory
The Dodgers refused to go down without a fight. In the seventh inning, Alex Freeland lifted a sacrifice fly to center field and Dalton Rushing scored. Los Angeles cut it to 6-2. Then in the eighth inning, Mookie Betts stepped up and crushed a pitch over the left field wall at 369 feet. The Dodgers were closing in. One inning later, Freeland doubled to right and Ryan Ward raced home. Now it was 6-4. Los Angeles had the momentum back. They were hungry. They were dangerous. But the White Sox held firm. Seranthony Dominguez came in to shut the door and got the final outs. The White Sox won 6-4. Chicago improved to 37-32 for the season while the Dodgers fell to 45-27. One game separated the teams in the standings now. This series had been wild.
