Clemens Hits Error Double, Twins Strike First
The Twins came into Fenway Park hungry after winning four straight games. They'd beaten the Red Sox 4-2 the night before and wanted to keep rolling. Boston was struggling. The Red Sox were 22-30 and lost three straight coming into Sunday. Sonny Gray took the mound for Boston. In the first inning, Kody Clemens smashed a single to right field. Wilyer Abreu's throw sailed wild—an error. Trevor Larnach raced home. Clemens slid into second base safely on the same throwing mistake. Josh Bell stood on third. Minnesota led 1-0 just two outs in. The Red Sox needed an answer fast.
Contreras Blasts Two-Run Homer, Sox Rally Back
Masataka Yoshida answered fast for Boston. The Red Sox slugger hit a solo home run off Bailey Ober in the second inning. The ball rocketed 393 feet to right field. Score was tied 1-1. Minnesota bounced back. Trevor Larnach singled in the third. Brooks Lee scored on the hit. Then Willson Contreras crushed a two-run bomb in the fourth. The ball flew 382 feet over the left field wall with Wilyer Abreu on base. Boston led 4-3. Marcelo Mayer added a single that scored Yoshida. The Red Sox were in front 5-3. Both teams were swinging hard now.
Martin and Lee Deliver Late, Twins Win 6-5
The sixth inning changed everything. Austin Martin slammed a double to left field. Orlando Arcia raced home from third. Ryan Kreidler scored too when Martin's hit landed. Then Brooks Lee stepped up with runners in scoring position. The young Twins slugger singled sharply to left. Both Martin and Kreidler streaked across home plate. Minnesota suddenly led 6-4. Boston fought back. In the ninth, Isiah Kiner-Falefa hit a fly ball to left. The Red Sox scored one more run. Final score was 6-5 Twins. Minnesota improved to 27-27 and stayed hot. Boston fell to 22-31. The Twins' pitching held on when it mattered most.
