Phillies Strike Early, Peralta Cannot Hold the Line
The Mets rolled into Philadelphia on Saturday riding a two-game winning streak. But they walked into a storm at Citizens Bank Park. The Phillies were hungry for revenge after dropping the series opener 6–4 on Thursday. Freddy Peralta took the mound for New York, and right away things went wrong. In the first inning, Bryce Harper stepped up with two outs and crushed a 93-mile-per-hour fastball deep to right center. The ball rocketed 385 feet and splashed into the stands. One swing, and the Phillies led 1–0. You could feel the momentum shifting instantly. The Mets were in trouble, and the night was young.
Kyle Schwarber Goes Nuclear, Phillies Run Away
Then the second inning hit like a lightning bolt. The Phillies battered Peralta relentlessly. J.T. Realmuto doubled to left, sending Alec Bohm home. Justin Crawford followed with another double down the middle, scoring Realmuto. The Phillies kept swinging. Then Kyle Schwarber stepped in and unleashed an absolute monster shot 456 feet to right center. The ball exploded off his bat and cleared the wall easily. One swing erased any hope the Mets had. By the time the second inning ended, Philadelphia led 4–0. Schwarber wasn't done either. Later in the third inning, he cranked another monster homer 457 feet, this one scoring two more runs. The Phillies were destroying Peralta pitch by pitch.
Mets Scratch Back, But the Game Is Already Gone
The Mets finally got on the board in the fourth inning when Mark Vientos launched a home run to left field, cutting it to 4–1. In the fifth inning, the Phillies answered right back. Bryce Harper tripled to center, scoring both Trea Turner and Kyle Schwarber to extend the lead to 6–1. Then in the seventh, Carson Benge hit a solo shot to right center for the Mets, making it 3–13. But Philadelphia's bats stayed hot. Schwarber smashed his third home run of the day to right field, pushing the final score to 15–3. The Phillies were relentless. The Mets fell to 34–42. Philadelphia improved to 40–35 and snapped their two-game losing streak with an overwhelming display of power.
