Phillies Strike Early Against Slumping Mets
The Mets rolled into Philadelphia after getting demolished 15-3 the night before. They needed to bounce back fast. The Phillies had other plans. Right from the start, the Mets' defense fell apart. David Peterson was on the mound for New York, but trouble found him immediately. Alec Bohm reached on an infield single to third base, and the throw sailed wild. Trea Turner scored on the error. Edmundo Sosa followed with another infield single, and Kyle Schwarber bolted home. Then came the knockout punch. Kyle Schwarber crushed a 92-mile-per-hour sinker that rocketed over the right-center wall 418 feet. Two more runs scored. The crowd at Citizens Bank Park erupted. Just two innings in, the Phillies led 5-0. The Mets needed a miracle to recover from this hole.
Mets Find Some Offense as Phillies Keep Rolling
The Mets finally got on the board in the third inning. Carson Benge stepped up against Zack Wheeler and launched a 96-mile-per-hour fastball 359 feet into left field. One run down, but Philadelphia was still way ahead. The Phillies answered back in the fifth. Austin Warren threw a sweeper to Bryce Harper, who crushed it to right field for 390 feet. Another home run. The gap kept growing. Later in the sixth inning, the Mets scratched out another run. A.J. Ewing grounded into a fielder's choice, and Carson Benge scored while running from second base. Philadelphia's Zack Wheeler was pitching brilliantly. He allowed just four hits and struck out seven batters over five and two-thirds innings. The Phillies' lead felt permanent. New York couldn't catch up no matter what they tried.
Phillies Finish Strong to Win 6-2 in Philadelphia
The final innings saw Philadelphia's relief pitchers take over and shut the door. Jonathan Bowlan, Jose Alvarado, Orion Kerkering, and Jhoan Duran all came in and pitched strong innings. They combined to keep the Mets scoreless and protect the lead. The defense played clean, and there were no more wild throws. When the final out came, the Phillies had won 6-2. Philadelphia improved to 41-35 on the season and kept their winning streak alive with this victory. For the Mets, the loss dropped them to 34-42. They had now lost their last game and couldn't find consistency. New York's pitcher David Peterson took the loss after giving up five runs in just four innings. The Mets were missing star players like Francisco Lindor and Luis Robert Jr. due to injuries. Without their full lineup, they couldn't generate enough offense to compete. Philadelphia's power was too much to overcome.
