Goldschmidt Gets Yankees Rolling Early
The Yankees rolled into Fenway Park down 48-31 on their record. Boston was struggling at 32-46, and the Red Sox needed a win. What a matchup on Thursday night! Right from the start, the Yankees pushed forward. In the first inning, Paul Goldschmidt sparked the offense. Jasson Dominguez stepped up and delivered a single to center field. Goldschmidt raced home for the first run. Two innings later, Jose Caballero crushed a fastball up and away. The ball rocketed over the left-center wall—400 feet of pure power! Caballero's home run extended New York's lead to 2-0. The Yankees were in control early, and their pitching staff would need to hold the line. Cam Schlittler took the mound for the visitors and looked sharp in those opening frames.
Red Sox Explode in Inning Five
Boston punched back hard in the fifth. Willson Contreras started the rally with a grounder to third. A throwing error by shortstop Amed Rosario let the ball get through. Masataka Yoshida scored on the play. Then Jarren Duran stepped to the plate and lifted a sacrifice fly to left field. Ceddanne Rafaela raced home to tie the game at 2-2. But the Red Sox weren't done yet. Caleb Durbin smashed a two-run homer into left field—344 feet of absolute thunder! Suddenly Boston led 4-2, and the whole stadium came alive. The Yankees' early lead evaporated in minutes. Schlittler struggled to find his rhythm, and Boston's lineup capitalized on every mistake. The momentum had shifted completely to the home team.
Yankees Rally Too Late to Catch Up
New York refused to go quietly. In the seventh inning, Paul Goldschmidt grounded out to third base. Jazz Chisholm Jr. raced home, and Wells moved to second. The Yankees scored to make it 4-3. But Boston answered right back in the eighth. A hit-by-pitch loaded the bases with runners everywhere. Then Ceddanne Rafaela hit into a fielder's choice, and two more Red Sox runners scored. Boston pulled ahead 6-3. Aroldis Chapman came out of the bullpen to close it down. The veteran threw one perfect inning to lock up the victory. Boston took the game 6-3 and improved to 33-46. The Yankees' record fell to 48-32. Aaron Judge remained sidelined with a rib injury, and New York's lineup felt his absence.
