Yankees Face Rested Red Sox in Fenway Park
The Yankees rolled into Boston on a rough stretch. They had lost three straight games coming into Saturday and sat at 48-34 on the season. The Red Sox were hungry. They had just won three games in a row and wanted to keep the momentum going at Fenway Park. Aaron Judge was out with a rib injury, which hurt the Yankees lineup big time. Max Schuemann stepped in to play right field instead. The final score tells you Boston dominated: 4-1. Let's walk through how it all went down, inning by inning, and see where the Yankees' pitching fell apart.
Yoshida, Seigler, Contreras Build Boston's Solid Lead
Gerrit Cole took the mound for New York and faced a tough first inning. Masataka Yoshida stepped up right away and crushed a fastball deep to right-center field. The ball flew 386 feet and landed over the wall. One pitch, one home run, and Boston led 1-0. Cole threw a 96-mph fastball and Yoshida was ready. In the second inning, Anthony Seigler jumped on a 97-mph fastball and sent it flying to left field. That ball traveled 339 feet and cleared the fence. The Red Sox were up 2-0. Then in the third inning, Willson Contreras lined a double to center field. Two runners scored on that hit. Boston now led 4-0 and the Yankees could barely get runners on base.
Schuemann's Solo Shot Comes Too Late for Yankees
Max Schuemann got the Yankees on the board in the fifth inning. He ripped a fastball from Jake Bennett into center field and the ball shot out 412 feet. It was a solo home run that cut Boston's lead to 4-1. But that was all the Yankees could manage. Cole pitched 5.1 innings and gave up four runs on seven hits. The Yankees' lineup just couldn't get anything going against Bennett and the Boston bullpen. Seigler's and Yoshida's early homers had set the tone. Cole threw strikes but the Red Sox batters found them. By the time Schuemann hit his homer, it was too little, too late. Boston closed out the game and improved to 35-46. The Yankees dropped to 48-35 and needed to bounce back fast.
