Yankees and Red Sox Battle in Fenway Park
The Yankees showed up at Fenway Park ready to fight back. New York had lost three straight games coming in, sitting at 48-34. Boston, riding a three-game winning streak, stood at 35-46 but felt dangerous at home. The night before, the Red Sox crushed the Yankees 4-1. This Sunday game would go back and forth, with both teams scratching and clawing for every run. Star Yankees slugger Aaron Judge was out with a serious rib injury—a huge loss for the lineup. The game came down to extra innings. When it finished, Boston won 5-4 in ten innings. You could feel the tension building from the first pitch to the last out.
Durbin Strikes Early, Red Sox Take the Lead
Caleb Durbin stepped up to the plate in the fourth inning with two outs. Carlos Rodon threw a 95-mile-per-hour fastball right down the middle. Durbin's bat cracked and the ball flew into center field. Two runs scored on that single—Wilyer Abreu and Willson Contreras came sprinting home. The Red Sox led 2-0. Boston's pitcher Sonny Gray was absolutely locked in. He threw fastball after fastball, striking out nine Yankees hitters through seven innings. The Red Sox defense played sharp, backing up every pitch. New York's hitters looked lost at the plate. Cody Bellinger struck out twice. Jazz Chisholm Jr. struck out twice. Jasson Dominguez struck out twice. You could see the frustration building in the Yankees dugout.
Yankees Rally in Extras, Red Sox Get the Final Say
The game stayed 2-0 Boston until the ninth inning. That's when the Yankees woke up. Ben Rice sent a fly ball to right field. Right fielder Wilyer Abreu made a throwing error, and Jose Caballero raced home. The Yankees had scored! But it wasn't over. Paul Goldschmidt grounded into a fielder's choice and another run scored. Now it was 2-2. Both teams pushed on through the tenth inning. Amed Rosario singled in the tenth, and Max Schuemann scored on another error by Abreu. Austin Wells grounded out, bringing Rosario home. Yankees led 4-2. But Boston wouldn't quit. Anthony Seigler singled. Tsung-Che Cheng hit a sacrifice fly. Jarren Duran singled. The Red Sox scored three runs and won 5-4. Boston improved to 36-46. New York fell to 48-35.
