Yankees Strike First, But Tigers Wake Up
The Yankees came to Detroit looking strong. They had won six of their last ten games and brought their ace, Gerrit Cole, to the mound. The Tigers sat at 33-44, hungry to keep their three-game winning streak alive. Cole threw hard early. In the second inning, Jose Caballero stole a base and scored on Ali Sanchez's double down the left line. New York led 1-0. But Detroit's bats were just getting started. Framber Valdez took the mound for the Tigers and threw strikes with confidence. The Tigers knew their pitching was special—and this game would prove it. Cole's control started to slip fast. Detroit's hitters were ready to pounce.
Cole Crumbles as Tigers Explode in Third and Fourth
Everything changed in the bottom of the third. Kevin McGonigle ripped a knuckle curve and reached base. Zach McKinstry scored. Then Spencer Torkelson singled to center field—Greene raced home and Carpenter crossed the plate. The Tigers took a 2-1 lead. Colt Keith kept the rally alive with another single through the middle. Greene scored again. Suddenly it was 3-1 Detroit. Cole was falling apart. In the fourth inning, McGonigle doubled down the left line. Lee scored on a throwing error by Caballero in left field. McGonigle reached third safely. The Tigers now led 4-1. Cole had given up four runs in two innings. Detroit's lineup was locked in, making every pitch count.
Greene's Blast Seals Detroit's Victory Over Yankees
The Tigers kept piling on in the fifth inning. Riley Greene stepped up to the plate facing Cole's changeup. The ball exploded off his bat—rocketing over right center field for 422 feet. Greene's solo home run made it 5-1 Detroit. Cole was done. The Yankees fought back late. In the seventh, Amed Rosario crushed a changeup from Drew Anderson. The ball sailed over right center for 373 feet. Wells scored ahead of him on a sacrifice run earlier. Rosario's two-run blast cut it to 5-3. But it was too late. The Tigers' pitching staff held strong. Framber Valdez pitched six innings of one-run ball with eight strikeouts. Will Vest closed it out. Detroit won 5-3. The Tigers improved to 34-44 and stayed hot. The Yankees fell to 46-31 after losing their second straight.
