Gold Slugger Strikes First for the Yankees
The Yankees rolled into Detroit looking to stay hot. They'd just beaten the Tigers 4-3 the night before. Now they faced Tarik Skubal, the Tigers' ace and two-time Cy Young winner. Paul Goldschmidt had other ideas. On the very first pitch Skubal threwâa 97-mile-per-hour fastballâGoldschmidt connected. The ball exploded off his bat and sailed over the left field wall. One swing, one run, Yankees up 1-0 before most fans finished their hot dogs. Goldschmidt wasn't done yet. Two innings later, he stepped in again. This time Skubal threw a curve. Goldschmidt crushed it 427 feet to left-center field. Another homer, another run. The Yankees had their ace, Ryan Weathers, working perfectly on the mound. He kept Detroit quiet early while Goldschmidt's bats did all the talking.
Tigers Fight Back but Yankees Stay Strong
Detroit wouldn't go down without a fight. In the second inning, Zach McKinstry singled to center field. Spencer Torkelson scored to tie the game 1-1. The Tigers had life. Then the Yankees answered right back. In the third inning, Goldschmidt homered againâhis second blast of the nightâputting New York up 2-1. Later in the fourth, Detroit got a run back. Ben Malgeri hit a sacrifice fly, and Torkelson scored. The game was tied 2-2. The tension built with every pitch. Weathers was dealing on the mound, striking out batters and keeping Detroit's lineup off balance. Neither team could pull ahead. Everything came down to one team making a big play at the right moment. The game hung in the balance, waiting for someone to break through.
Dominguez Delivers the Clinching Blows Late
The sixth inning changed everything. Jasson Dominguez stepped into the batter's box with two outs. Skubal wound up and threw an 86-mile-per-hour changeup. Dominguez waited for it. Then he unloaded. The ball rocketed off his bat and cleared the left field fence. Dominguez had smashed a 382-foot home run. Ben Rice scored ahead of him. Yankees led 4-2 and never looked back. Ryan Weathers pitched six strong innings with six strikeouts. The bullpen locked it down. David Bednar came in and earned the save. The Yankees walked out of Detroit with a win. Their record improved to 47-31. The Tigers fell to 34-45. This series belonged to New York. The Yankees' power batsâGoldschmidt and Dominguezâhad been too much for Detroit's pitching staff.
