Astros Strike First in Sunday Showdown
The Yankees hosted the Astros on Sunday in a crucial matchup. New York came in hot after exploding for eight runs on Saturday, but Houston was ready for a fight. The Astros jumped out to an early lead with powerful hitting, while Yankees starter Luis Gil faced immediate pressure. Houston's Spencer Arrighetti took the mound determined to slow down New York's momentum. Both teams looked sharp defensively, but the Astros' bats made the difference early. Walker connected on a changeup in the first inning, launching a towering blast that soared 432 feet to center field with an exit velocity of 110 mph. The hit brought Paredes home, giving Houston a quick 2-0 advantage before the Yankees could blink.
Houston's Bats Keep Pounding Away
The Astros continued their offensive assault in the third inning when Paredes stepped up with runners on base. He crushed a sinker at 95 mph, sending it 364 feet to left field with an exit velocity of 102 mph. Alvarez scored on the hit, extending Houston's lead to 4-0. Things got even worse for New York in the fifth inning when the Astros scored three more runs. Paredes singled to left, driving in Correa, then Walker doubled to left field, scoring both Alvarez and Paredes. The double traveled 379 feet with an impressive 102 mph exit velocity. Houston's bats were on fire, and the Yankees offense couldn't keep pace. Judge finally broke through in the sixth inning with a solo home run to center, but it was too little too late.
Yankees Rally Late but Fall Short
Down by seven runs heading into the ninth inning, the Yankees refused to give up without a fight. Goldschmidt doubled to center, driving in Chisholm Jr. to make it 7-2. Escarra followed with another double to right field, scoring Goldschmidt and cutting the deficit to 7-3. McMahon kept the rally alive with a single to right, bringing Escarra home and closing the gap to 7-4. Although New York mounted an impressive comeback in the final frame, they couldn't quite catch up to Houston's early onslaught. The Astros held on to win 7-4, improving their record while the Yankees fell to 18-10 after their first loss in the series. Both teams showed resilience and determination throughout this competitive Sunday matchup.
