Blue Jays Strike Early in Inning One
The Yankees came to Toronto on Friday night looking to keep their win streak alive. New York was 41-26 and riding high after four straight wins. The Blue Jays needed a boost. They were 33-36 and had lost their last game. Both teams were ready for battle at Rogers Centre.
But Toronto came out swinging. In the bottom of the first, Alejandro Kirk stepped up with two outs. Ryan Weathers threw an 80-mile-per-hour sweeper. Kirk didn't wait. He drove a double down the left field line and Ernie Clement raced home. One run in. Then Kazuma Okamoto came up and hit Weathers' slider 423 feet into the left field seats. The ball flew like a rocket. Kirk scored behind him. Toronto led 3-0 before the Yankees even got a turn at bat.
Yankees Rally Back, Blue Jays Answer
The Yankees refused to quit. In the fifth inning, Paul Goldschmidt stepped up with two outs and crushed a sacrifice fly to right. J.C. Escarra tagged up and scored. Then Cody Bellinger ripped a fastball 350 feet to right field. The ball sailed over the wall. Ben Rice scored. Just like that, New York cut the lead to 5-3.
Toronto wasn't done either. Jake Bird took over on the mound for the Yankees. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. doubled to left and George Springer scored. Alejandro Kirk followed with a single to right and Guerrero Jr. came racing home. The Blue Jays pushed their lead to 6-3. The teams traded runs back and forth, trading punches like two boxers in the ring.
Blue Jays Hold On for Victory
The Yankees kept fighting. In the sixth inning, Trent Grisham smacked a single through the center field gap. Both Spencer Jones and Jose Caballero scored. Suddenly the game was tied 5-5. You could feel the momentum shifting toward New York.
But the Blue Jays got the last word. In the eighth inning, Ernie Clement doubled to right field with two outs. George Springer raced home from second base. Toronto scored the final run to win 8-5. The Blue Jays held on. This win moved Toronto to 34-36. The Yankees fell to 41-27. New York's four-game winning streak came to an end on the road. Toronto's bats came alive early and made it stick.
