Oakland Dominates Early in Commanding Offensive Display
The Oakland Athletics traveled to face the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday, May 20, ready to bounce back after losing a close 2-1 game the day before. The Angels came in hoping to build momentum from their exciting comeback win. However, Oakland's bats came alive immediately, and the Athletics took control early with an explosive third inning. Kurtz singled to center, driving in McNeil to give Oakland an early lead. Then Thomas doubled down the right field line, scoring two more runners and extending the advantage. The Athletics weren't done yet—Rooker added a single, and Gelof followed with another single that scored two more runs. By the end of the inning, Oakland had jumped out to a commanding 6-0 lead, and the Angels were already facing an uphill battle.
Angels Fight Back but Oakland Stays Ahead Throughout
Mike Trout answered Oakland's early barrage with a solo home run in the bottom of the third inning, sending the ball 410 feet into center field with an exit velocity of 105 mph. The Angels continued battling in the fourth inning when Mike Trout drew a walk with the bases loaded, allowing Oswald Peraza to score. Grissom followed with a single that brought home two more runs, pulling Los Angeles closer at 6-4. Oakland responded decisively in the sixth inning when Kurtz singled sharply, scoring Heim and Hernaiz to extend the lead to 8-4. The Athletics were relentless, maintaining their advantage throughout the middle innings and refusing to let the Angels completely back into the game despite their solid comeback efforts.
Oakland Extends Lead Late; Athletics Cruise to Dominant Victory
Oakland's powerful offense took over in the seventh and eighth innings, putting the game completely out of reach. Gelof launched a solo home run to right-center field in the seventh inning, traveling 377 feet and stretching the lead to 9-4. The real fireworks came in the eighth when Kurtz doubled to right, scoring two more runs to make it 11-4. Rooker then launched his own home run to left-center, a mammoth 406-foot blast that scored Kurtz and extended Oakland's advantage to 13-4. The Angels managed to score twice more in the eighth inning when Lowe doubled, but it was too little too late. Hernaiz capped off the scoring with a single in the ninth, giving Oakland a dominant 14-6 victory and improving their record to 24-24 for the season.
