Marsh Powers Phillies as Cubs Strike Late
The Philadelphia Phillies traveled to Chicago on Thursday looking to bounce back from a tough loss. Coming into the game, the Phillies struggled with a nine-game losing streak. Meanwhile, the Cubs were rolling hot, riding a nine-game winning streak of their own. Both teams were hungry to prove their pitching depth could lead them deep into the season. Cristopher Sánchez took the mound for Philadelphia, while Edward Cabrera started for Chicago. Early action brought excitement when Marsh connected on a fastball from Cabrera, launching a 425-foot home run to right center in the second inning. The Phillies jumped ahead 1-0 with that powerful swing. However, the Cubs answered back immediately with a sacrifice fly from Swanson, tying the game at one.
Cubs Build Lead with Busch's Three-Run Blast
The Cubs took control in the third inning when Christopher Busch stepped up to the plate. With runners on first and second, Busch crushed a sinker from Sánchez deep to center field. His 421-foot home run soared high into the Chicago air, bringing two runners home and giving the Cubs a 4-1 advantage. That powerful swing completely changed the game's momentum. The Phillies fought back in the fourth when Marsh singled to left, scoring Harper and making it 4-2. Yet the Cubs answered right back when Happ launched a 429-foot home run to left, extending the lead to 5-2. Chicago's offense was proving too much for Philadelphia's pitching, even with their talented rotation. The Cubs seemed destined to extend their winning streak further.
Phillies Rally Fails as Cubs Hold on for Victory
Philadelphia refused to go quietly into the night. In the seventh inning, Marsh homered again, this time a 339-foot blast to left center, bringing the Phillies within striking distance. Then an error by the Cubs' third baseman allowed Stott to score, and Stubbs added a sacrifice fly that made it 5-6. Suddenly the game felt alive, with Philadelphia tying things at 6-6 in the eighth when Sosa singled, scoring Moore. However, Suzuki answered for Chicago with a 393-foot home run in the bottom of the eighth, putting the Cubs back ahead 7-6. García tied it in the ninth with another home run, but Swanson delivered the final blow in the tenth inning, singling to right and scoring Happ with the winning run. The Cubs escaped 8-7.
