Phillies Strike First Behind Harper's Bat
The Philadelphia Phillies rolled into New York's Citi Field looking to keep their hot streak alive. They came in riding three straight wins after winning 7 of their last 10 games. The Mets were strugglingâthey'd lost six in a row and sat at 34-47. Right from the start, you could feel the Phillies' confidence. In the first inning, Bryce Harper stepped up to the plate against Zach Thornton. Harper saw a cutter come in at 86 miles per hour and connected hard. The ball shot to center field. Trea Turner raced home from third base. Schwarber moved to second on the hit. Just like that, Philadelphia led 1-0 before the Mets could even blink. Harper went 3-for-4 with an RBI on the night. The Phillies' ace, Zack Wheeler, took the mound ready to work.
Wheeler Dominates, Mets Battle Back
Zack Wheeler was nearly untouchable for the Phillies. The ace moved through seven innings, giving up only four hits and one run. He struck out five batters and walked just one. Wheeler was a wall out there on the mound. But the Mets didn't go away quietly. In the fourth inning, Bo Bichette stepped up and scored on a Jared Young single to right field. Young's hit brought Bichette home, tying the game at 1-1. The Mets had clawed back into this one. Then in the seventh inning, things got interesting. Huascar Brazoban took over pitching for New York. Trea Turner came up swinging. He drove a sinker at 95 miles per hour and slapped it to left field. Derek Hill scored. Stott moved to second. The Phillies had retaken the lead, 2-1. New York couldn't answer back.
Philadelphia Holds On for Important Road Win
The Phillies closed out this game strong. Orion Kerkering came out of the bullpen and threw one clean inning. No hits, no runs, no walks. Then Jhoan Duran entered in the ninth to lock things down. The closer struck out one and didn't allow a run. Just like that, Philadelphia had their fourth straight win. The final score was Phillies 2, Mets 1. This victory improved Philadelphia to 45-36 on the season. They were 23-19 at home before this road trip, and now they had another important win in their pocket. The Mets fell to 34-47. Their losing streak now sat at six games. For the Phillies, this was a masterclass in winning close games. Their pitching staffâled by Wheeler's gemâshut down New York's bats. Philadelphia's pitching depth showed why they're dangerous in the National League. This was exactly the kind of victory that builds a team's confidence heading into the second half.
