Schwarber Strikes First in Philadelphia Victory
The Philadelphia Phillies rolled into San Diego ready to bounce back. They faced the Padres at Petco Park with a record of 27-27 while San Diego sat at 31-22. The Phillies came in hungry after winning their last game. This matchup would test both teams' pitching staffs early in the season. Kyle Schwarber stepped up to the plate in the first inning against Griffin Canning. The ball rocketed off his bat and flew over the right field wall for a solo home run. It was a 374-foot blast that gave Philadelphia an instant 1-0 lead. Canning threw that changeup at 90 miles per hour. Schwarber's power was on full display. The Phillies' slugger had already hit 20 home runs this season. One swing set the tone for what would become a dominant pitching performance by Philadelphia.
Marsh Extends Philadelphia's Lead in Seventh
Six innings passed with the Phillies holding their 1-0 advantage. Philadelphia's pitching was locking down San Diego's lineup completely. The Padres couldn't break through against the Phillies' arms. Then the seventh inning arrived and Philadelphia's bats came alive again. Brandon Marsh stepped into the batter's box with two outs. Griffin Canning fired a slider at 87 miles per hour. Marsh connected hard and sent it soaring into right field. The ball cleared the wall for a two-run home run. That blast was 368 feet long. Schwarber, who was on base, raced home with the run. Suddenly Philadelphia led 3-0 and controlled the entire game. The Padres' pitcher was in serious trouble. Those two swings—Schwarber's and Marsh's—had done all the damage the Phillies needed that day.
Duran Closes Out Dominant Phillies Shutout Win
Philadelphia's pitching staff was absolutely brilliant from start to finish. Jesus Luzardo started for the Phillies and pitched six innings without allowing a run. He gave up just four hits and struck out six batters while walking two. The Padres' lineup never got anything going against Philadelphia's dominant arms. San Diego managed only a handful of hits the entire game. Their bats stayed quiet throughout. Orion Kerkering came in and threw one inning of relief. Brad Keller pitched one clean inning next. Then Jhoan Duran took over in the ninth inning as the closer. The Minnesota Twins' star reliever locked it down with devastating stuff. Duran struck out one batter and got the save. The final score: Philadelphia 3, San Diego 0. The Phillies improved to 28-27 while the Padres dropped to 31-23. Philadelphia's pitching had completely shut down one of the league's strong offenses.
