Phillies Come to Town After Big Win
The Phillies rolled into Toronto on Tuesday night riding high. They'd crushed the Blue Jays 5-2 the night before, and their pitching staff was ready to keep the heat on. But the Blue Jays had other plans. This game would go down to the final inning, with both teams leaving everything on the field. By the end, Toronto pulled off a 3-2 victory at home. The Blue Jays' bats stayed quiet most of the night, but when they needed hits, they found them. Zack Wheeler was brilliant on the mound for Philadelphia. The ace gave up just one run over six innings, striking out five batters and walking none. His fastball was sharp, his control was perfect. But sometimes even the best pitcher can't overcome small mistakes.
Wheeler Sharp, Sanchez Launches Bomb
Trea Turner scored Philadelphia's first run in the top of the first inning. Brandon Marsh doubled to right field off Dylan Cease, and Turner raced home. The Phillies led 1-0 early. But Toronto's pitcher Dylan Cease was sharp himself. He struck out eleven batters across six innings. In the bottom of the sixth, Jesus Sanchez stepped up for the Blue Jays. Cease threw a cutter at 89 miles per hour. Sanchez connected perfectly. The ball rocketed over right-center field, traveling 396 feet before landing in the stands. The crowd erupted. Toronto tied the game at 1-1 with that one swing. Both teams were locked in a pitcher's duel. Every at-bat mattered. Every pitch counted.
Blue Jays Grab Late Heroics for Victory
The game stayed tied 1-1 until the ninth inning. Both bullpens were sharp. No runs crossed the plate for innings. Then the Phillies got their chance. Bryson Stott stepped into the box and drove a double to left field off reliever Louis Varland. Bryce Harper scored from second base. Philadelphia led 2-1 with two outs in the ninth. Toronto's turn came next. Jhoan Duran threw a wild pitch that scored a run. The game was tied 2-2. Then Brandon Valenzuela came through with a single to left field. One run scored. Toronto won 3-2. The Blue Jays improved their record to 33-35 at home. The Phillies fell to 36-31 overall. One pitch changed everything.
