Pirates Visit Colorado Without Cruz and the Rockies Strike Early
The Pittsburgh Pirates rolled into Colorado looking to bounce back after losing 3-0 the night before. Without star outfielder Oneil Cruz sidelined by a hand injury, the Pirates faced an uphill battle at Coors Field. The Rockies, sitting at 29-47, were hungry for a win. Colorado struck first in the bottom of the third inning when Willi Castro lined a double to right field off Pirates starter Bubba Chandler's curve ball. The hit scored Ezequiel Tovar and sent Kyle Karros to third base. Then TJ Rumfield came up swinging in the fourth inning. He crushed a fastball deep to right—the ball rocketed 427 feet over the wall for a solo home run. The Rockies jumped out to a 2-0 lead before the Pirates could even get a bat on the ball.
Kyle Freeland was rolling for Colorado, striking out batters and keeping Pittsburgh's lineup off-balance with his cutter and fastball.
Pirates Explode in the Eighth and Take the Lead
Everything changed in the eighth inning when Pittsburgh's bats finally woke up. Jared Triolo stepped up and ripped a double to right field off Kyle Freeland, and Esmerlyn Valdez raced home to make it 2-1. Bryan Reynolds pinch-hit and wasted no time—he smacked a single up the middle that scored Triolo and tied the game at 2-2. The Pirates weren't finished. Nick Gonzales came up with two outs and delivered the knockout punch. He drove the ball deep to right for a triple that scored Spencer Horwitz, giving Pittsburgh a 3-2 advantage. You could feel the momentum shift. The Pirates had clawed back from behind and taken their first lead. Bubba Chandler had pitched six solid innings for Pittsburgh. Now it was up to the bullpen to protect this fragile advantage and hold off Colorado's desperate comeback attempt in the final inning.
Rockies Answer Back Late as Colorado Sneaks Past Pittsburgh
The Pirates' lead didn't last long. Colorado came roaring back in the bottom of the eighth inning against Pirates reliever Mason Montgomery. Braxton Fulford stepped up to the plate and smashed a double into center field. The ball rolled through the grass as Cole Carrigg and Tyler Freeman raced home. Just like that, the Rockies had scored twice and took a 4-3 lead they would not relinquish. Pittsburgh got one more chance to tie it up, but they couldn't push another run across. The final score was 4-3, Rockies. Colorado improved to 29-48 with the thrilling victory. For Pittsburgh, the loss dropped them to 38-39 after they had fought back so hard to take the lead. The Pirates left runners on base in their final chance. It was a tough loss for a team trying to climb back into contention. The Rockies had found a way to win at home.
