Pirates Strike First in Colorado
The Pirates came to Denver looking to bounce back. They'd lost 3-0 the night before and needed a win badly. Jared Jones took the mound for Pittsburgh, ready to keep the Rockies quiet. But Colorado got to him fast. In the second inning, Sterlin Thompson grounded a ball to second base and Freeman raced home with a run. The Rockies led 1-0 early. The Pirates didn't panic. They knew they had powerful bats. Bryan Reynolds and Nick Gonzales were ready to strike. The game felt tight, but Pittsburgh had momentum building. You could feel something big was coming from the Pirates' dugout. They were hungry after yesterday's loss and ready to show what they could do in Denver.
Pirates Explode With Power Bats
Now things got wild. Nick Gonzales stepped up in the fourth inning and crushed an 83 mph curveball. The ball flew 431 feet over left-center field. Reynolds raced home on that blast. Pirates led 2-1. But Pittsburgh wasn't done yet. In the fifth, Jared Triolo doubled down the right-field line and Mangum scored. Then in the sixth, Tyler Callihan singled to right and drove in Gonzales. Two pitches later, Mangum ripped another double to the right and Callihan came home. The Pirates were rolling. Then came the seventh inning. Bryan Reynolds stepped up and launched a 84 mph sweeper. The ball sailed 433 feet to right field. Horwitz and Lowe both scored on that two-run homer. Pirates led 8-1. You could see Denver fans sinking in their seats.
Rockies Rally Late But Come Up Short
Colorado refused to go quietly. In the eighth inning, TJ Rumfield stepped into the batter's box against Dennis Santana. The 89 mph changeup came in and Rumfield crushed it 387 feet to right-center. McCarthy and Castro scored on that blast. Suddenly it was 8-4. The Rockies kept fighting in the ninth. Kyle Karros doubled to left and Fulford raced home. Jake McCarthy reached on an infield single and scored on a throwing error by Brandon Lowe. Just like that, it was 8-6. But time ran out. The Pirates held on to win 8-6. Pittsburgh improved to 39-39 and snapped their two-game losing streak. Colorado fell to 30-47 despite the late comeback. The Pirates showed they could come to Denver and battle. Their power bats made the difference today.
