Pirates Strike First, But Astros Answer Early
The Pittsburgh Pirates came into Thursday's game at Minute Maid Park riding a win from the night before. They'd beaten Houston 10-6 on Wednesday and wanted to keep the streak going. But the Astros had other plans. In the bottom of the third inning, Houston's bats woke up fast. Yordan Alvarez smacked a single to right field, and Nick Allen scored immediately. Two outs later, Isaac Paredes lined a single to left, and Jeremy Peña raced home. The Pirates answered right back in the fourth inning when Henry Davis crushed a bomb over the wall to left field. The ball flew 396 feet and three runners scored behind him. Ozuna, Garcia, and Triolo all crossed the plate. Just like that, the game was tied at 4-4, and both teams knew this would be a slugfest.
Gonzales and Garcia Keep Pirates Fighting Back
The Pirates refused to fall behind for long. In the seventh inning, Nick Gonzales came up and smashed a baseball deep to left-center field. The ball traveled 370 feet and cleared the wall. Reynolds scored on the homer, putting Pittsburgh ahead 7-3. Two batters later, Jhostynxon Garcia lined a double to center field, and another run scored on the play. But Houston's bats stayed hot. Yohan Ramirez took the mound for Pittsburgh, and Isaac Paredes turned on a fastball in the bottom of the seventh. He drove it 363 feet to left field for a two-run home run. Alvarez scored with him. The Astros cut the lead to 8-5 and momentum was shifting toward Houston fast.
Wild Eighth Inning Brings Astros Dramatic Win
The eighth inning exploded into total chaos. Pirates reliever Mason Montgomery struggled immediately. With two outs, Christian Vazquez doubled to center. Then Yordan Alvarez singled, and another run scored. Christian Walker reached on an infield single as an error let Peña score. Isaac Paredes walked, and a wild pitch scored yet another runner. The score was tied 9-9 with runners everywhere. Then Cam Smith stepped up. He ripped a triple deep to right field, and two more runners raced home. Houston won 11-9. The Pirates fell to 34-30 while the Astros improved to 28-37. One swing changed everything. Smith's clutch hit gave Houston the victory they desperately needed.
