Pirates Come to Citizens Bank, Chandler Takes the Loss
The Pittsburgh Pirates rolled into Philadelphia looking for back-to-back wins. They'd just beaten the Phillies 11-7 the night before in an explosive slugfest. But tonight at Citizens Bank Park, the Phillies had revenge on their minds. Bubba Chandler took the mound for Pittsburgh, hoping to shut down Philadelphia's powerful lineup. The Phillies were ready to strike. Their pitching staff—led by ace Zack Wheeler and deep with arms like Cristopher Sánchez—was one of the best in baseball. Pittsburgh's star pitcher Paul Skenes wasn't pitching tonight, so the Pirates would need Chandler to be sharp. Instead, the Phillies jumped on him early. By the final out, Philadelphia would cruise to an 8-0 victory. It was a complete turnaround from the wild game just hours before.
Crawford, Turner, Harper Light Up Chandler's Pitches
The Phillies attacked immediately in the second inning. Justin Crawford stepped to the plate with two outs. Chandler fired a 101-mile-per-hour fastball that Crawford fouled away. Then came the slider at 88 miles per hour. Crawford swung and drove it to left field for a single. Two runs scored on that one hit—Alec Bohm and J.T. Realmuto raced home. The Pirates were down 0-2 before they could blink. Later, in the seventh inning, the Phillies kept the pressure on. Trea Turner doubled down the left field line, and Derek Hill scored. Then Bryce Harper ripped a single to right, and Turner came flying around to score. Brandon Marsh grounded into a fielder's choice, and Schwarber scored. The Pirates' defense couldn't stop the bleeding.
Turner's Home Run Puts Game Away as Pirates Go Scoreless
The Pirates' bats stayed silent all night long. They managed just five hits through the entire game. Esmerlyn Valdez was their best hitter, going 2-for-3 with a walk. Nick Gonzales had one hit in four at-bats. Everyone else—Reynolds, Ozuna, Triolo, Davis—couldn't find their stroke. In the eighth inning, the Phillies sealed it. Trea Turner stepped into the box against Brandan Bidois. The ball exploded off Turner's bat and rocketed to right-center field. It sailed 376 feet over the wall. Turner had hit a two-run homer, making it 8-0. Crawford had singled before him to score another run. The final score was Philadelphia 8, Pittsburgh 0. The Phillies improved to 47-38 while the Pirates fell to 43-43. For Pittsburgh, it was a tough night after such a big win the day before.
