Pirates Strike Early in Philadelphia
The Pittsburgh Pirates walked into Citizens Bank Park ready to battle. Philadelphia had won the last game, 10-6, but Pittsburgh wasn't backing down. The Phillies were 49-39 and hunting a playoff spot. The Pirates sat at 44-44, hungry to climb back into things. Jared Jones took the mound for Pittsburgh. In the third inning, Bryce Harper stepped up for the Phillies and crushed a double down the left field line. Rafael Marchán scored on the play. The Phillies had drawn first blood, 1-0. But the Pirates knew this game was far from over. They had plenty of baseball left to play and weapons ready to strike back.
Pirates Explode with Timely Hits
Pittsburgh's bats came alive in the fifth inning. Tim Mayza was pitching for Philadelphia when Esmerlyn Valdez ripped a single to center. Jake Mangum scored to tie the game at 1-1. The Pirates were cooking now. Two innings later, Valdez crushed a triple to center field, and Brandon Lowe sprinted home. Now Pittsburgh led 2-1. Nick Gonzales followed with a single to center, scoring Valdez. The Pirates pushed it to 3-1. The momentum had completely flipped. Pittsburgh's lineup was getting good pitches and making them pay. Valdez was becoming the star of the night. Every swing seemed to find grass. The Phillies' pitching staff was struggling to keep the Pirates quiet.
Pirates Close It Out with Power
The eighth inning brought the thunder. Endy Rodriguez stepped in against Lou Trivino and launched a bomb to center field. The ball rocketed 395 feet and cleared the wall. Pirates led 4-1. Moments later, Valdez hit a sacrifice fly to right field, and Mangum scored again. Pittsburgh's lead was now 5-1. The Phillies couldn't find an answer. In the ninth, Nick Gonzales came up with Kyle Backhus throwing. Gonzales crushed a sweeper over the left-center wall for a home run. That made it 6-1. Game over. The Pirates dominated from start to finish. They proved their bats were sharp and their pitching was strong. Pittsburgh won 6-1 and improved to 45-44, while Philadelphia dropped to 49-40.
