Padres Strike Early, Then Diamondbacks Take Over
The San Diego Padres and Arizona Diamondbacks faced off at home on Sunday, April 26. San Diego came into the game riding confidence after beating Arizona 6-4 the day before. Both teams brought solid pitching to the field, with Michael King starting for the Padres and Ryne Nelson taking the mound for Arizona. The scoreboard would tell quite a story by game's end, as Arizona dominated late to win 12-7. Early on, though, San Diego looked unstoppable. Campusano doubled to left in the second inning, scoring Bogaerts and giving the Padres their first lead. When Machado connected on a home run in the third, the ball rocketed 436 feet to center field. Suddenly, San Diego led 3-0 with momentum on their side.
Machado's Bats Explode, Arizona Fights Back
Machado had an incredible day at the plate for San Diego. In the fifth inning, he crushed another home run, this one sailing 395 feet to right field with two runners on base. That three-run blast gave the Padres a commanding 6-0 lead. Then Campusano added his own home run in the sixth inning, extending San Diego's advantage to 7-0. Arizona's pitching was struggling, but their hitters were about to show their resilience. Fernandez launched a solo home run in the fifth inning, and Vargas added another in the sixth. However, these were just appetizers for Arizona's main course. The Diamondbacks' bats came alive in the seventh inning when Tawa connected for a massive grand slam. That single swing cut the Padres' lead dramatically and launched Arizona's incredible comeback.
Diamondbacks Complete Stunning Comeback Victory
Arizona's seventh inning explosion continued as Gurriel Jr. doubled to left, scoring two more runs. The score stood 7-6, and suddenly the Padres' comfortable lead had vanished completely. When the eighth inning arrived, Arizona delivered the final blow. Vargas tripled to right field, driving in three additional runs to make it 11-7. Moments later, Marte singled to right, and Vargas raced home with the twelfth run. The game ended 12-7, giving Arizona an incredible turnaround victory. San Diego's hot start meant nothing as Arizona's hitters stepped up when it mattered most. Both teams now continued their seasons knowing that baseball can change direction in an instant. The Diamondbacks improved to 15-12 with this win, while the Padres fell to 18-9, dropping their record on the road.
