Padres Strike First, Then Orioles Take Over
You're watching the Padres and Orioles square off at Baltimore. San Diego comes in at 35-32, fresh off a win. The Orioles sit at 33-37 but have won their last two games at home. Griffin Canning takes the mound for the Padres. Shane Baz pitches for Baltimore. Right away, the Padres strike. Gavin Sheets crushes a 85-mph knuckle curve into right field for a double. Fernando Tatis Jr. races home. San Diego leads 1-0. But Baltimore answers back fast. Adley Rutschman lifts a sacrifice fly to right. Taylor Ward scores to tie it. Then Samuel Basallo crushes a changeup 389 feet into right-center. Two runs score on the blast. Suddenly it's 3-1 Baltimore. The Orioles are rolling early.
Canning Struggles As Baltimore Pulls Away
The second inning brings more trouble for Canning. Fernando Tatis Jr. singles to center on a 95-mph sinker. Ty France races home. The Padres cut it to 3-2. But Baltimore doesn't let San Diego stay close. Jackson Holliday hits a sacrifice fly to center. Colton Cowser scores. It's 4-2 now. Then Pete Alonso slaps a single to left field. Gunnar Henderson sprints home. O'Neill scores too. Suddenly it's 6-2 Baltimore. Canning's arm is tired. He's given up six hits and seven runs through five innings. The Orioles' bats are on fire. Gunnar Henderson steps up in the fourth inning. He crushes a sinker 386 feet over the wall in right field. Solo shot. It's 7-2 Baltimore now. The game is getting away from San Diego fast.
Baltimore Holds On For The Victory
The fifth inning is quiet for both teams until Gavin Sheets singles to center for San Diego. Manny Machado comes home. It's 7-3 Baltimore. That's the last scoring of the game. Canning leaves after five innings with seven earned runs charged to him. Wandy Peralta and David Morgan pitch well in relief, keeping Baltimore off the board. But it's too late. The Orioles' bats did the damage early and often. Shane Baz gets the win for Baltimore. He pitched five innings and gave up three earned runs. Both teams' bullpens shut things down. Final score: Baltimore 7, San Diego 3. The Orioles improve to 33-37 with this win at home. San Diego falls to 35-32 on the road. Baltimore's offense, led by Henderson, Alonso, and Basallo, was simply too much today.
