Padres Fall Behind Early at Coors Field
The San Diego Padres traveled to Colorado on Thursday, April 23, ready to build on their impressive start. Coming off a thrilling 1-0 victory the day before, San Diego's pitching staff felt confident heading into Coors Field. However, the Rockies had other plans. Starting pitcher Walker Buehler took the mound for the Padres, while Colorado sent Tomoyuki Sugano to the plate. Early in the first inning, Merrill's sharp single to center drove in Laureano, giving San Diego a quick 1-0 lead. Unfortunately, Colorado answered back hard. The Rockies' bats exploded in the second inning, scoring four runs and seizing control of the game. Singles, doubles, and clutch hits put Colorado ahead 4-1 after just two innings.
Rockies Dominate Middle Innings and Build Lead
After Colorado's explosive second inning, the Rockies continued to pile on the runs. In the fourth inning, Rumfield singled to right, driving in Goodman to extend Colorado's advantage to 5-1. The home team stayed hungry. During the sixth inning, Rumfield stepped up again with a double to center field that soared 389 feet into the air. That hit scored Moniak, pushing the lead to 6-1. Meanwhile, the Padres were struggling to answer. The Colorado pitching staff kept San Diego's hitters off balance throughout the middle innings. Although the Padres' defense remained solid with no errors, they couldn't find the offensive spark needed to mount a comeback. By the time we reached the seventh inning, Colorado held a commanding 6-1 advantage.
Late Padres Rally Falls Short in Colorado
San Diego finally got on the board in the seventh inning when Campusano launched a home run 401 feet to left field, cutting Colorado's lead to 6-2. The Padres showed resilience despite trailing by multiple runs. However, Colorado wouldn't let up. McCarthy singled to right in the bottom of the seventh, allowing Karros to score and extend the Rockies' lead back to 7-2. In the eighth inning, Goodman delivered a devastating blow with a home run that traveled 427 feet to left-center field, giving Colorado an 8-2 advantage. The Padres scored one final run in the ninth inning when Cronenworth grounded out, allowing Campusano to score. Final score: Colorado 8, San Diego 3. The Rockies dominated at home to stay competitive in a tough division.
