Tigers Strike Early Behind Carpenter's Blast
You're watching the Seattle Mariners roll into Detroit needing a win after losing the night before. The Tigers are hungry too. They've won four straight games and want to keep that winning streak alive at home. Bryan Woo takes the mound for Seattle with electric stuffâthrowing a 97-mile-per-hour fastball that's nearly unhittable. But in the third inning, everything changes. Kerry Carpenter steps up and crushes a slider that launches 347 feet over the right field wall. Dillon Dingler scores ahead of him. Detroit explodes into chaos. The score is 3-1 Tigers. Seattle's one early run came from Rob Refsnyder's single that brought home J.P. Crawford. Now the Mariners are chasing as the Tigers take control early.
Emerson Battles Back, Torres Extends Tigers Lead
The Mariners don't quit. In the seventh inning, Colt Emerson crushes a fastball that sails 351 feet to left field. One run back. The score is 3-2 and Seattle is fighting. But the Tigers answer right back. Gleyber Torres smacks a double into right field that brings home two runsâColt Keith and Zach McKinstry both score. Now Detroit leads 5-2 and Torres is standing proud on second base. Bryan Woo has given up five runs through six and a third innings with seven strikeouts. The Tiger bats are heating up in their home park. Seattle's pitching can't find the answers they need. The eighth inning is coming and the Mariners' time is running out to catch back up.
Torkelson Goes Deep as Tigers Hold on for Win
The Mariners scratch out another run in the eighth. Mitch Garver singles to right field and Josh Naylor scores. It's 5-3 now. Seattle is still fighting hard. But Spencer Torkelson has the final answer. The Tigers' power-hitting first baseman crushes a slider 389 feet into left field. Riley Greene crosses home plate. Detroit wins 7-3. The Tigers improve to 26-38 and grab another victory in their winning streak. Seattle falls to 33-31 even though they fought back with some impressive hits. Woo takes the loss after pitching well most of the game. The Mariners head home looking to bounce back in their next contest.
