Seattle Wins Series Opener, Then Detroit Roars Back
You could feel the energy shift at Comerica Park on Sunday. The Mariners rolled in hot after shutting out Detroit 4-0 the night before. But the Tigers had other plans. This game became a wild back-and-forth battle that came down to the final pitch. Detroit walked away with a 5-4 victory to split the two-game set. The Mariners dropped to 34-33 on the season. Meanwhile, Detroit improved to 27-40 and grabbed momentum heading forward. Star outfielder Julio Rodriguez was out there for Seattle, looking to extend their streak. Jack Flaherty took the mound for the Tigers, ready to bounce back after getting hammered in game one. Both teams knew this contest would shape how the rest of their weekend looked. The stage was set for drama.
Young's Hit Sparks Seattle, But McGonigle Answers Back
Cole Young got the Mariners rolling in the third inning with a sharp single to right field off Flaherty. That knock scored Colt Emerson and put Seattle ahead 1-0. But Detroit answered right back in the fourth inning when Kevin McGonigle stepped up to the plate. McGonigle locked in on a fastball from Luis Castillo and unleashed it. The ball screamed toward right field and cleared the wall at four hundred twenty feet. The Comerica crowd erupted as McGonigle trotted around the bases. Game tied 1-1. The Mariners weren't done though. In the sixth inning, Josh Naylor laced a double to right field, and Julio Rodriguez scored to make it 2-1 Seattle. Then Colt Emerson got hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, bringing home another run. Mariners led 3-1 going into the seventh.
Detroit Storms Back Late, McGonigle Delivers Final Blow
Randy Arozarena kept Seattle's rally going in the seventh with a single to right that scored Rodriguez. The Mariners stretched their lead to 4-1. That's when Detroit made their move. In the seventh inning, Wenceel Perez ripped a triple to right field. That triple scored both Spencer Torkelson and Zach McKinstry, bringing Detroit within striking distance at 4-3. The momentum shifted. Everything tightened up heading into the ninth. Then Kevin McGonigle stepped into the box against closer Andres Munoz with two outs. McGonigle connected and drove a single to right. McKinstry and Perez came flying across home plate. Final score: Tigers 5, Mariners 4. Detroit claimed the victory and evened up their recent matchups. The Mariners fell to 34-33 while the Tigers improved to 27-40.
