Seattle Shuts Down Kansas City Behind Gilbert's Arm
The Seattle Mariners rolled into Kansas City on Friday night and left with a 2-0 victory. The Royals came in struggling, having lost four straight games and sitting at 20-31 on the season. Seattle arrived at 25-27, riding a two-game winning streak and looking to stay hot. The Mariners were without catcher Cal Raleigh, who went down with an oblique injury earlier in the week. Mitch Garver stepped in behind the plate for the road trip. Logan Gilbert took the mound for Seattle and was absolutely dominant. He pitched 5 and two-thirds innings, scattered just two hits, walked two, and struck out six batters. No runs scored against him. Kansas City managed nothing at the plate early. The Mariners' pitching was suffocating the Royals' bats from the first pitch.
Garver Crushes Two-Run Homer in the Seventh
Nothing happened on the scoreboard for six full innings. Both teams were locked in a pitcher's duel. Then the seventh inning arrived and everything changed. Nick Mears came in to pitch for Kansas City. Mitch Garver stepped up with Cole Young on base. The first pitch came in at 94 miles per hour—a sinker that sailed high. The second pitch was another sinker, this one at 93 miles per hour. Garver's eyes lit up. He ripped it. The ball rocketed to left field and kept climbing. Four hundred and six feet later, it soared over the wall. Garver had a two-run homer. Young scored from base. Seattle was up 2-0. The Mariners suddenly had all the breathing room they needed. Kansas City's hitters still could not answer back.
Munoz Locks Down the Win as Seattle Escapes
The eighth and ninth innings were nerve-wracking for Seattle fans. Kansas City needed just one run to make things interesting. But the Mariners' bullpen was ice cold. Matt Brash threw one inning and allowed two hits but no runs. Eduard Bazardo pitched an inning and a third with three strikeouts and zero runs. Then Andres Munoz came in for the save. Munoz threw one inning of perfect baseball. No hits, no walks, no runs. Three strikeouts looked easy coming out of his hand. The final out came and Seattle had their victory. The Mariners improved to 26-27. Kansas City fell to 20-32. This was the kind of pitching performance that wins ballgames. Seattle's depth in the bullpen showed why their rotation is one of baseball's most reliable. The Mariners' pitching staff had silenced the Royals all night long.
