Rodriguez Launches Early Bomb in Kansas City
The Mariners flew into Kauffman Stadium ready to bounce back. They'd lost 5-0 the night before. Seattle needed to strike fast. Julio Rodriguez stepped into the batter's box in the first inning against Seth Lugo. The pitch came in at 89 miles per hour—a sinker down the middle. Rodriguez didn't miss. He crushed it to left field. The ball rocketed 405 feet into the night sky. One swing. One run. Seattle led 1-0. The Mariners had their spark. Rodriguez looked locked in at the plate. He was hunting fastballs and finding them. Kansas City heard the crowd roar but stayed calm. They knew they had plenty of baseball left to play. The early advantage felt good for Seattle, but this game had a lot of innings waiting.
Perez and Jensen Flip the Script in Fifth Inning
Then the Royals woke up. Bryan Woo threw a 96-mile-per-hour fastball to Carter Jensen in the fifth inning. Jensen connected. The ball flew to center field. Not a home run, but close. It was a double. Two runners scored. Perez had singled earlier in the inning with two outs, driving in two more runs. The Royals went from nothing to four runs in minutes. Salvador Perez was a weapon in the middle of their order. His hit to left put them ahead. Jensen's double made it worse for Seattle. Suddenly Kansas City led 4-1. The Mariners' early lead had vanished. The Royals' bats came alive when it mattered. Woo struggled to escape the inning. Seattle's bullpen would take over soon. This game was turning into a fight.
Mariners Fight Back but Fall Short in Final Frame
Seattle wasn't done. In the seventh inning, Colt Emerson singled to left. Then J.P. Crawford singled too. The Mariners scratched out two more runs. They were down 5-3. In the ninth inning, Rodriguez singled to right. Josh Naylor singled to center. Randy Arozarena doubled to left. Runs kept crossing the plate. Rodriguez scored. Naylor scored. The Mariners made it 6-8. But Kansas City held on. Maikel Garcia singled with two outs in the eighth, driving in two runs that sealed the win. The Royals beat the Mariners 8-6. Seattle fell to 25-29. Kansas City improved to 22-31. Both teams were struggling this season. But on Sunday, the Royals' late offense was too much. The Mariners fought hard in the ninth but came up two runs short.
