Ketel Marte homers fast, Giants trail early
The Giants rolled into Arizona down 3-0 after losing the night before. The Diamondbacks were hungry for a win at their home stadium. But right away in the first inning, the D-backs struck hard. Ketel Marte stepped up to face Giants pitcher Tyler Mahle and connected on a 92-mph fastball. The ball rocketed over the right field wall—367 feet of pure power. Arizona jumped ahead 1-0 before the Giants even got a chance to bat. The early homer set the tone for a back-and-forth battle. San Francisco needed to answer back fast. The Giants were at 35-49 on the season, fighting just to stay in games. Arizona sat at 42-42, right in the thick of things. This was exactly the kind of game where one team could steal momentum early.
Arizona erupts with runners in scoring position
By the fifth inning, things got wild. The Giants scored first when Jonah Cox laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt. Victor Bericoto sprinted home. It was 1-1, and the game was tight. Then Arizona's bats woke up in the bottom of the fifth. Geraldo Perdomo stepped to the plate with runners on base. He ripped a double down the left field line. The ball found grass and kept rolling. Arenado scored. Marte scored. Tommy Troy scored. Suddenly it was 4-1, Arizona. Three runs on one swing changed everything. The Diamondbacks weren't done yet. In the sixth inning, Nolan Arenado crushed another home run—this one sailing 397 feet to left field. Arizona was dominating now, up 5-1 and rolling.
Giants make late push but Arizona holds on
Down 5-1, the Giants didn't quit. In the eighth inning, Casey Schmitt stepped up with runners in scoring position. He didn't try to do too much—just lifted a sacrifice fly to center field. Drew Gilbert raced home. Luis Arraez moved to third. It was 5-2 now. Then came the ninth. Heliot Ramos dug in against closer Paul Sewald. The count went 0-1. Sewald threw an 82-mph sweeper. Ramos connected and crushed it deep to left center—415 feet into the Arizona night. One swing brought San Francisco right back. It was 5-3. Then Drew Cavanaugh singled to right, scoring Bryce Eldridge. The Giants made it 5-4. But Arizona held on. Final score: Diamondbacks 5, Giants 4. Arizona improved to 43-42. San Francisco dropped to 35-50. A heartbreaker for the visiting team.
