Giants Explode Early, Cubs Fight Back Hard
The Cubs hosted the Giants at Wrigley Field after blowing them out 18-3 the night before. You'd think San Francisco would come in defeated, but Rafael Devers had other plans. In the sixth inning, Devers stepped up to face reliever Caleb Thielbar. The pitch came in at 93 miles per hourâa four-seam fastball right down the middle. Devers ripped it to right-center field, and the ball soared deep over the wall. The Giants took a 1-0 lead. The Cubs answered right back. Pete Crow-Armstrong came to the plate against Landen Roupp. On a 92-mile-per-hour sinker, Crow-Armstrong crushed a fastball 386 feet to right field. His homer tied the game at 1-1. Two teams, two solo shots, one tied ballgame heading to the late innings.
Chapman's Sacrifice Fly Puts Giants Up in Ninth
The game stayed tight as we moved into the ninth inning. The Giants had a runner on baseâJung Hoo Lee on third after stealing earlier in the ballgame. Matt Chapman stepped up with two outs and the pressure on. Daniel Palencia wound up and threw a 99-mile-per-hour four-seam fastball. Chapman made contact and lifted a fly ball into the center field air. Lee didn't wait. He sprinted home from third, beating the throw easily. The Giants grabbed a 2-1 lead with that sacrifice fly. Everything came down to the bottom of the ninth now. Could the Cubs climb back? The home crowd at Wrigley grew louder. The Giants had one inning to hold on and steal this game from Chicago.
Crow-Armstrong Wins It with Two-Out Homer in Tenth
The Cubs came to bat in the bottom of the ninth down 2-1. They needed a miracle. Pete Crow-Armstrong stepped into the box against Keaton Winn. The Giants pitcher delivered, and Crow-Armstrong was ready. He connected on a 403-foot blast to right field. The ball exploded off his bat and cleared the wall. The game was tied 2-2. Into extra innings they went! In the tenth, the Cubs got another chance. Michael Busch singled to right field, and Dansby Swansonâpinch-runningâraced home. A fielding error by Giants right fielder Victor Bericoto let Swanson score easily. The Cubs won 3-2. Chicago improved to 34-31 with this thrilling comeback. The Giants fell to 26-39. One wild night at Wrigley Field decided everything.
